ઇતિહાસ
(૧) માણસનો અવતાર મોંઘો નહીં મળે ફરી
સ્વામિનારાયણ સંપ્રદાયમાં દેવાનંદ સ્વામીનાં ઉપદેશ પદો પ્રસિદ્ધ છે. તેમની કાવ્ય રચનામાં મનુષ્ય જન્મની દુર્લભતા, જગતના સુખનું નાશવંતપણું, સંસારમાં દુઃખ, એવા વિષયો જોવા મળે છે.
એક વખત શ્રીજી મહારાજને ધરમપુરના રાજાએ તેના દરબારમાં પધારવા આમંત્રણ આપ્યું. મહારાજ થોડા ભક્તો અને મોટેરા સંતોને લઈને રાજાના દરબારમાં પધાર્યા. રાજાએ રાજ્યકવિઓ અને ગાયકોને તેમની કળા રજું કરવા મંચ પર કાર્યક્રમ ગોઠવ્યો. આ કાર્યાક્રમમાં ગાયકોએ જે કાવ્યો ગાયાં તેમાં મનુષ્ય દેહે વિષય ભોગવવા તેવો ભાવાર્થ દેખાતો હતો અને ગાયકોને પોતાની ગાવાની કળા બતાવી દેવી તેવો પણ ગર્વ હતો. ગીતોમાં વિષય ભોગવવામાં ગુણ બતાવ્યો, કારણ કે રાજા પણ વિષય ભોગમાં માણતા હતા.
શ્રીજી મહારાજે આ કવિઓની મૂર્ખતા પારખી લીધી અને જાણ્યું કે આ રાજાને વિષયભોગમાં ગુણ બતાવીને તેનો જન્મ ગુમાવે છે. મહારાજે દેવાનંદ સ્વામીને કીર્તન સંભળાવવા સમયસૂચક આજ્ઞા કરી. દેવાનંદ સ્વામી સહજતાથી સંસારનું સુખ ત્યાગ કરીને સાધુ થયા હતા. તેમના હૃદયમાં જગતની અને વિષય ભોગવવનાની વાસના હતીજ નહિ. બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામીના શિષ્ય હતા માટે ગાનવિદ્યા પણ વરેલી હતી. એક અપ્રચલીત પણ શાસ્ત્રમાં મળી આવે એવા સુરમાં કીર્તન ગાવાનું શરું કર્યું. રાજ્યસંગીતકારોને તેમને સંગીતમાં સાથ આપતાં ફાવ્યું નહીં. રાજા પ્રસન્ન થઈ ગયા પણ રાજ્યકવિઓને આ રુચ્યું નહીં.
સ્વામીએ રાજ્યસંગીતકારોને ફાવે તેવું બીજુ કીર્તન ઉપાડ્યું. આ કીર્તનના શબ્દો સાંભળીને ધારી અસર થઈ. તેમણે કીર્તનના ઉપદેશ પ્રમાણે જીવન જીવવાનું નક્કી કર્યું અને શ્રીજી મહારાજના આશ્રિત થયા. મહારાજ પણ પ્રસન્ન થયા. મહારાજે પોતાનું વસ્ત્ર દેવાનંદ સ્વામીને ભેટમાં આપ્યું. બીજુ એક શ્વેત વસ્ત્ર પણ સ્વામીને ભેટમાં આપ્યું જે દેવાનંદ સ્વામીએ સમગ્ર જીવનમાં સાચવી રાખેલું.
History
(1) Māṇasno avatār mongho nahī maḷe farī
Devanand Swami is regarded in the Swaminarayan sampradāy as the extinguisher of material desires. All his kirtans refer to the importance of the human life as opposed to the importance of the human body. In all his kirtans, Swami constantly reminds us how dispensable the material joys of this world are and what happens to people who are infatuated with indulgences of the human body.
Once, Shriji Maharaj was invited to the court of the king of Dharampur. Maharaj went with His small group of senior sadhus and devotees. The king organized a stage performance for his royal poets to sing and impress the guests. The poets sang verses highlighting the enjoyment of the human body and prided themselves of their prowess of singing. They praised the material possessions the king had enjoyed, as they were a reflection of his stature and success.
Shriji Maharaj saw the folly of these poets and thought the king would be misled into incorrectly understanding the true purpose of human life. Wittingly understanding the moment, He asked none other than Devanand Swami to sing. Devanand Swami had given up desires of the human body so easily and did not look back at the comforts of the body. Being a disciple of Brahmanand Swami, he was well learned and had mastered the art of music. He started to sing a kirtan in a tune found in the scriptures only and not used commonly in traditional singing. The royal musicians could not play their instruments to this tune or lend their chorus to it. The king was impressed but the royal poets and musicians were vexed.
Swami composed another kirtan with an easier tune and the poets managed to lend a chorus to it. The words of this kirtan impressed them so much that they changed their course of life and became devotees of Shriji Maharaj. Maharaj was impressed as well. He removed His top silver threaded garment and swung it over Swami’s head and presented it as a commemorative gift to the poet. He further gave another white garment that He frequently wore to Swami as a gift, which Swami retained and cherished in his whole life as a sanctified item.
