(૧) પાછી આપો તમારો પાડ રે મારી ધોરાજીની ધાબળી

આ. સં. ૧૮૮૪માં શ્રીજી મહારાજ જૂનાગઢ મંદિરની મૂર્તિપ્રતિષ્ઠા માટે રોકાયા હતા. જૂનાગઢમાં છેલ્લા દિવસે ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામીને મહંત બનાવ્યા અને બધાને જૂનાગઢ આવી એક માસ તેમનો સમાગમ કરવો તેવી આજ્ઞા કરી.
જૂનાગઢથી નીકળતાં છેલ્લા દિવસે સવારે મહારાજે સૌ સંતોને કહ્યું, “ચાલો, દામોદર કુંડે સ્નાન કરી દત્તાત્રયને પગલે જઈએ.” એમ સખા સંગે મહારાજ નીકળ્યા.
દામોદર કુંડે સ્નાન કરી, ચડાણની વાવે ગયા. અહીં બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામીએ સૌ સંતોને સુખડીનું ટીમણ કરાવ્યું. પછી વાવનું પાણી મંગાવી સૌએ પીધું.
પછી બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામીએ મહારાજને કહ્યું, “સૌ સંતો ગિરનાર ચઢશે તો મંદિરમાં રસોઈ કોણ કરશે? ત્યાં તો સ્વામી એકલા છે.”
એટલે મહારાજ ઊઠ્યા અને પોતાના હાથમાં સોટી હતી તે વતી એક લીટો કરીને કહ્યું, “આ લીટાની ઉગમણીકોર જે સંતો ઊભા હોય તે બધા ગિરનાર ચઢવા જાય અને આથમણી બાજુના બધા સંતો મંદિરે પાછા જાય.”
મહારાજની આ આજ્ઞા સાંભળી આથમણી બાજુ જે સંતો હતા તે સૌ મંદિરે ગયા. બીજા ગિરનાર ચઢવા ગયા. મહારાજ ત્યાં થોડી વાર બ્રહ્મમુનિ સાથે વાતો કરતા બિરાજ્યા.
તે વખતે એક વૈકુંઠાનંદ સાધુ ગિરનાર ચઢવાના લોભે ઝાડીમાં સંતાઈ ગયા હતા, પરંતુ મહારાજ ત્યાં બેઠેલા એટલે શી રીતે બહાર આવી ઉપર ચઢી શકે? મહારાજ ત્યાંથી મંદિર જવા રવાના થયા એટલે તે સાધુ ગિરનાર ચઢવા ગયા. પરંતુ મોડું બહુ થયું હતું અને ગિરનાર ચઢવા ગયેલા સંતો પાછા વળતા હતા.
મહારાજ મંદિરે પધાર્યા અને થોડી વારે સંતો પણ ગિરનાર ચઢીને આવી ગયા. ‘વાસુદેવ હરે’ થયા અને મહારાજ સૌને પીરસવા પધાર્યા. સૌ સંતોને સારી રીતે જમાડી તૃપ્ત કર્યા. પછી પોતે જમ્યા. ત્યારબાદ મહારાજ સંતો તથા સખાઓને સાથે લઈ ધોરાજી તરફ જવા જીર્ણદુર્ગથી નીકળ્યા.
વૈકુંઠાનંદ સાધુ ગિરનાર ચઢીને મંદિરે આવ્યા પરંતુ મહારાજ તો નીકળી ગયા હતા. એટલે દર્શન થયાં નહિ. વળી, રસોઈ પણ બધી ખલાસ થઈ ગઈ હતી તેથી ભૂખ્યા પણ રહ્યા. પછી મહારાજ કઈ તરફ પધાર્યા છે તે પૂછીને તેમણે પણ ધોરાજીની વાટ પકડી. અહીં આવ્યા પરંતુ અહીંની ધાબળીની પ્રખ્યાતિ સાંભળી બજારમાં ધાબળી લેવા રોકાયા. ગાંઠેથી પાંચ રૂપિયા કાઢીને સરસ મુલાયમ ધાબળી ખરીદી. ગામમાં મહારાજની તપાસ કરી પરંતુ મહારાજ તો મળ્યા નહિ. આમ, આજ્ઞા લોપતાં જે દુઃખ અને મુશ્કેલી આવે છે તેનો સાક્ષાત્ અનુભવ તેમને થયો.
કહેવાય છે કે શ્રીજીમહારાજે ગઢપુરમાં તેમની પાસેથી ધાબળી લઈ લીધી અને તેમના દેખતાં જ બાળી દીધી હતી. આ વખતે તેમણે મહારાજને ઘણા કાલાવાલા કર્યા કે, “મહારાજ! પુસ્તકો વેચીને ધાબળી લીધી છે માટે બાળી ન દેશો.” પરંતુ મહારાજને તો તેનો ફરી સંકલ્પ ન થાય તેમ કરવું હતું. તેથી જ ધાબળી બાળી દીધી હતી.

The Blanket from Dhoraji
In A. S. 1884, Shriji Maharaj performed the murti-pratishthā of the Junagadh mandir. On the last day, he appointed Gunatitanand Swami as the mahant and asked everyone to spend one month of the year in Junagadh listening to his discourses.
On the morning that he left from Junagadh, Maharaj told all of the sadhus, “Come, let’s take a bath in Damodar Kund and visit Dattatreya’s footprints.”
Maharaj and the sadhus all bathed in Damodar Kund and went to the step well of Chadān. Here, Brahmanand Swami served all of the sadhus a sweet snack of sukhdi, which everyone ate. Then they drank water from the step well.
Then, Brahmanand Swami told Maharaj, “If all the sadhus climb Girnar, who will prepare the midday meal back in the mandir? Gunatitanand Swami is there alone.”
Maharaj drew a line in the sand with a wooden rod and declared, “All of the sadhus east of this line should go and climb Girnar, whereas all of the sadhus west of this line should go back to the mandir.”
All of the sadhus set out to the mandir or Mt. Girnar according to Maharaj’s command. Maharaj remained there for some time, engaged in discussions with Brahmanand Swami.
Meanwhile, one of the sadhus who had been commanded to return to the mandir, Vaikunthanand Swami, was bent on climbing Girnar. So, instead of going to the mandir, he had circled back and hidden in the brush, hoping to surreptitiously join the group of sadhus going to Girnar. However, with Maharai still seated nearby, how could he join the other group without risking discovery?
After some time, Maharaj got up to return to the mandir, giving that sadhu enough space to slip out and follow the group climbing Girnar. However, so much time had elapsed that as he was ascending Girnar, he met the group of sadhus coming back down the mountain. He quickly continued up to the peak, while the rest of the sadhus set off for the mandir.
Soon after Maharaj returned to the mandir, the group of sadhus that had climbed Girnar also arrived there. Everyone sat for lunch and Maharaj served everyone to their capacity. Then, Maharaj himself ate. Finally, Maharaj, accompanied by the sadhus and devotees, departed from Junagadh for the town of Dhoraji.
By the time Vaikunthanand Swami finally return to the mandir from Girnar, Maharaj had already left. Not only had he missed Maharaj’s final darshan, but he had also missed lunch, as there was no food left. Dejected and hungry, Vaikunthanand Swami inquired about Maharaj’s whereabouts, and followed him on the road to Dhoraji. On the way, he remembered hearing about the fine woolen blankets available in the markets of Dhoraji. So, when he reached Dhoraji, instead of looking for Maharaj, he went straight to the market to buy a blanket. Finding a very soft blanket that he liked, he paid for it with five rupees that he had kept with him. Then, he went throughout the town searching for Maharaj, but Maharaj was nowhere to be found. In this way, Vaikunthanand Swami experienced the hardships and misery that result from disobeying Maharaj’s commands.
Some time later, in Gadhada, Maharaj had the blanket from Dhoraji taken from Vaikunthanand Swami and commanded that it be burned in front of the entire assembly. Vaikunthanand Swami had pleaded with Maharaj to return his blanket, confessing, “Maharaj, I have sold my books to pay for that blanket. Please don’t bum it.” However, since Maharaj wanted to ensure that he would never again be tempted to break his vows, he had the blanket burned.
