(૧) માઈરી મૈં તો પુરુષોત્તમ વર પાયો
વરતાલમાં પોતાની મૂર્તિ પધરાવવનો નિર્ણય
આ કીર્તનના ઇતિહાસની પાછળ સદ્ગુરુ મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને શ્રીજી મહારાજના સર્વોપરીપણું સમજાયું તે પ્રસંગ છૂપાયેલો છે. મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને ગુરુ રામાનંદ સ્વામીમાં દૃઢ પ્રીતિ હતી, પણ મહારાજને ભગવાન સમજવામાં દ્વિધા રહી ગઈ હતી. ગુરુ રામાનંદ સ્વામીએ દર્શન આપી સમજાવ્યું ત્યારે મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને આનંદ થયો અને આરતી રચી. (જુઓ આરતીનો ઇતિહાસ). છતાં મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને શાસ્ત્રની રીતે કૃષ્ણથી કોઈ પર નથી તેવી સમજણ હતી. માટે મહારાજને કૃષ્ણ ભીન્ન અને પર છે તે વાતની ગેડ બેસત નહોતી.
વરસો પછી જ્યારે બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામી વરતાલનું મંદિર બનાવતા હતા, ત્યારે મહારાજે પોતાની મૂર્તિ હરિકૃષ્ણ મહારાજના નામે પધરાવવનું નક્કી કરેલું. આ વાત બધાને કાને પહોંચી ગઈ હતી અને બ્રહ્માનંદ સ્વામીએ મહારાજને જણાવ્યું પણ ખરું કે અમુકને આ વાત રુચતી નથી. મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને પણ મહારાજ પોતાની મૂર્તિની પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરે તે વાત રુચિ નહીં. મહારાજ જાણતા હતા કે મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામી આ પ્રસંગમાં આવશે તો પોતાની મૂર્તિની પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરવા નહીં દે. મહારાજે ગઢપુરથી નીકળતાં પહેલાં મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને બોલાવ્યા અને કહ્યું, “સ્વામી! આપને શરીરે ઘણી જ કસર છે અને વરતાલમાં માણસનો સમૂહ મોટો થશે. આપને તકલીફ પડશે. માટે આપ વરતાલ ન આવો તો સારું.”
મહારાજ પોતાની મૂર્તિની પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરવાના હતા તેનો ખ્યાલ હોવાથી, આ સાંભળી મુક્તમુનિ વિચારમાં પડી ગયા. મહારાજ પૂર્ણ પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ છે તે સાચું, પરંતુ મનુષ્ય સ્વરૂપે પ્રગટ છે અને લોકો પણ તેમને એ ભાવથી જુએ છે. તેથી જો મહારાજ પોતાના જ હસ્તે પોતાની મૂર્તિ પધરાવશે, તો લોકમાં ઘણું ખોટું દેખાશે અને ઘણા ભક્તો પાછા પડી જશે. તેમના આ વિચાર સાથે પરમહંસોમાંથી પણ કેટલાક સંમત થયા હતા. મહારાજની મૂર્તિ ન પધરાવાય તેવું તેઓ માનતા હતા.
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીએ વિચાર કર્યો કે જો હું વરતાલ નહીં જાઉં તો મહારાજ તેમની મૂર્તિ જરૂર પધરાવી દેશે! તેથી આ પ્રસંગે અસ્વસ્થ તબિયત છે છતાં જવું તો ખરું જ. તેમણે હાથ જોડી મહારાજને કહ્યું, “મહારાજ! વરતાલમાં આવો મહોત્સવ થાય અને હું અહીં બેસી રહું તે મને ઠીક લાગતું નથી. મારે આવવાની ઇચ્છા છે.”
મહારાજ તેમના મનોભાવ સમજી ગયા. તેમણે કહ્યું, “ભલે, તો થઈ જાવ તૈયાર.”
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને હાથે ઈજા થાય છે
મહારાજ સંઘ સાથે રોજકા પધાર્યા. અહીંથી કાકાભાઈને સાથે લીધા. સંઘમાં સૌ ઉતાવળાં ઉતાવળાં ચાલતા હતા. મુક્તમુનિ પણ મહારાજની વાતો કરતાં કરતાં ચાલતા હતા. તેમને ગાંફના હિમા સોનીએ તેમની ઘોડી ઉપર બેસવા કહ્યું. મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીએ કહ્યું, “મને ઘોડી ઉપર બેસવાનો મહાવરો નથી, એટલે પગે ચાલવાનું વધારે ઠીક પડે છે!”
પરંતુ સોનીએ બહુ જ આગ્રહ કર્યો. એટલે સ્વામી ઘોડી ઉપર બેઠા. આગળ જતાં ઘોડીનો પગ ખાડામાં પડ્યો અને સ્વામી ઘોડી ઉપરથી પડી ગયા. સૌ હરિભક્તો તરત જ દોડીને સ્વામી પાસે આવ્યા. સ્વામીના જમણા હાથ ઉપર તેમના આખા શરીરનો ભાર આવી ગયો એટલે જમણો હાથ ભાંગી ગયો. સ્વામીને ઝોળીમાં બેસારી કમિયાળા લાવ્યા. અહીંના ભક્ત આશાભાઈએ સંતોને ઉતારવા માટે મંદિર કરાવ્યું હતું, તેમાં સ્વામીને સુવાર્યા.
મહારાજને સમાચાર મળ્યા એટલે મહારાજ પણ તરત જ પધાર્યા. સ્વામીનો હાથ ભાંગ્યો તેથી મહારાજને અત્યંત દુઃખ થયું. તેમણે કહ્યું, “આવા અજાતશત્રુ જેવા મારા સંતને આ દુઃખ આવ્યું! હવે જરૂર પૃથ્વી ઉપર ઉત્પાત થશે.” એમ કહીને વૈદ્યને બોલાવી સ્વામીનો હાથ ચડાવ્યો. પાટો બંધાવ્યો.
પછી મહારાજે તેમને કહ્યું, “સ્વામી! હવે તમે અહીં જ રોકાઈ જાવ. પ્રતિષ્ઠા ઉત્સવ ઉપર આવવાનો સંકલ્પ કરશો નહીં.” સ્વામી પણ મહારાજની મરજી સમજી ગયા.
મહારાજ કમિયાળામાં મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને મળે છે
આ. સં. ૧૮૮૧, કાર્તિક સુદ ૧૨ના દિવસે વરતાલમાં મહારાજે પોતાની મૂર્તિની પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરી. પ્રતિષ્ઠા બાદ મહારાજને મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને મળવું હતું. એટલે મહારાજ કમિયાળા પધાર્યા. સીસા વણારને ત્યાં ઊતર્યા. મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને પણ ત્યાં જ સારવાર માટે રાખ્યા હતા. તેમને હાથે હવે સારું હતું, પરંતુ અશક્તિ ઘણી હતી. મહારાજ પધાર્યા એટલે સ્વામીને પણ મહારાજનાં દર્શનથી આનંદ થયો. સ્વામીના ખાટલા પાસે સાંગામાંચી ઉપર મહારાજ બિરાજ્યા. મહારાજે સ્વામીના કુશળ પૂછ્યા. શરીરે હાથ ફેરવ્યો. પછી મહારાજે તેમને કહ્યું, “સ્વામી! વરતાલમાં લક્ષ્મીનારાયણ દેવ પધરાવી દીધા છે. હરિભક્તો બધા બહુ જ રાજી થયા. હવે દેવ બેઠા છે, તો જે ભાવથી પૂજન કરશે તેને તે પ્રમાણે ફળ મળશે.”
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામી શાંતિથી સાંભળતા હતા. તેમને પણ સમાચાર તો મળી ગયા હતા કે દક્ષિણ તરફના મંદિરમાં મહારાજે પોતાની મૂર્તિ ‘હરિકૃષ્ણ’ નામ આપી પધરાવી છે. મહારાજે અપૂર્વ પ્રતાપ બતાવ્યો, તેથી કોઈ બોલી શક્યા નહીં અને નિર્વિઘ્ને સર્વોપરી ઉપાસ્ય સ્વરૂપનું સ્થાપન થઈ ગયું!
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામીને પ્રતીતિ થાય છે - મહારાજ લક્ષ્મીનારાયણથી જુદા છે
મુક્તાનંદ સ્વામી વિચારમાં પડી ગયા. તેમને થયું કે મહારાજે સ્વયં પોતાનું સ્વરૂપ પધરાવી દીધું! તેમને લાગ્યું કે લક્ષ્મીનારાયણ દેવથી મહારાજ જુદા છે. મહારાજે તેમને રામાનંદ સ્વામીનું સ્વરૂપ લઈને કાલવાણીમાં પોતાના સ્વરૂપની વાત કરી હતી. તે સાંભળી તેમને અંતરમાં શાંતિ થઈ હતી. પરંતુ ગુણના ભાવથી કોઈક વાર અશાંતિ પણ થઈ જતી. તેથી ગઢપુરમાં મહારાજે પોતાનાં ચરિત્રોની વાત બે-ત્રણ દિવસ તેમને કરી. આ વાતો સાંભળી તેમને શાંતિ થઈ ગઈ. તેમને લાગ્યું કે મહારાજ શ્રીકૃષ્ણ સાક્ષાત્ છે. તે ભાવનાં કીર્તન ‘મારો મત કહું તે સાંભળો વ્રજવાસી રે’ તેમણે બનાવ્યાં.
મહારાજને અંતરમાં સ્વામી પ્રત્યે ભાવ હતો. ભગવાન મેળવવા તેમણે કેટલો પરિશ્રમ કર્યો! પરંતુ તેમને લાગતું કે જો પોતાના સર્વોપરી સ્વરૂપની નિષ્ઠા સ્વામીને નહીં થાય તો તેમનો પરિશ્રમ અધૂરો રહી જશે. પ્રાપ્તિમાં ફેર પડી જશે. એટલે ગામડી ગામમાં પણ મહારાજે તેમને પોતાના સ્વરૂપની વાતો કરી હતી. ધરમપુર જતાં રસ્તામાં પણ વાતો કરી હતી. છતાં સ્વામીના અંતરમાં મહારાજના સર્વોપરી સ્વરૂપની વાત બેસતી ન હતી. આજે જ્યારે મહારાજે પોતાના સ્વરૂપની વરતાલમાં પ્રતિષ્ઠા કરી, ત્યારે તેમને નિશ્ચય થઈ ગયો કે જે સ્વંયં પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ હોય તે જ દેવને જુદા રાખીને પોતાની શુદ્ધ ઉપાસના પ્રવર્તાવવા પોતાની મૂર્તિનું સ્થાપન કરી શકે. તે નિઃશંક વર્તે. સમાજ કદાચ સર્વોપરી સમજણની એ ઉચ્ચત્તમ કક્ષાએ ન પહોંચ્યો હોય તો તેમને ત્યાં પહોંચાડવો જ પડે. પરંતુ નીચા ભાવના સ્તરે તો તેને ન જ રહેવા દેવો.
મહારાજના આ કાર્યથી તેમના અંતરમાં અત્યંત આનંદ થયો! મહારાજ સર્વોપરી પુરુષોત્તમ નારાયણ સર્વ અવતારના પણ કારણ છે એ નિષ્ઠા તેમના અંતરમાં આજે દૃઢ થઈ ગઈ! તેમના મુખમાંથી શબ્દો નીકળી પડ્યા: ‘માઈરી મેં તો પુરુષોત્તમ વર પાયો...’ મહારાજને આ સાંભળી અત્યંત આનંદ થયો!

(1) Māīri mai to Purushottām var pāyo
Decision to Install His Own Murti in Vartal
The story behind this kirtan is Muktanand Swami’s realization that Shriji Maharaj is Purushottam, distinct from Krishna and other avatārs. When Maharaj first arrived in Loj, Muktanand Swami witnessed Maharaj’s powers and miracles. However, he had firm faith in Ramanand Swami, so he experienced some turmoil accepting Maharaj as someone greater than his previous guru. However, when Ramanand Swami gave him darshan, he felt peace and accepted Maharaj as God. Muktanand Swami composed the ārti expressing his joy from this meeting. (See History of the Arti) However, he did not realize Maharaj’s complete supremacy.
Years later, when Brahmanand Swami was constructing the Vartal mandir, Maharaj had decided to install his own murti by the name of Harikrishna Maharaj. This news spread to everyone and some people were opposed to the installation. Even Muktanand Swami did not like this idea. Maharaj knew that if Muktanand Swami attended the installation ceremony, he would not allow the installation of his own murti. Therefore, Maharaj told Muktanand Swami before he left Gadhada for Vartal, “Swami, you are quite ill. Many people will gather in Vartal and you will experience hardship. It would be best if you did not come.”
Muktanand Swami went into deep thought, knowing that Maharaj would install his own murti. It is true that Maharaj is Purna Purushottam, but he is present in human form; and the general people perceive as a human. So, if Maharaj installs his own murti with his own hands, then it would not sit well with the general people and many will fall back from Satsang. Many other paramhansas agreed with Muktanand Swami and believed Maharaj should not install his own murti.
Muktanand Swami, despite his illness, decided to accompany Maharaj, lest he does install his own murti. He folded his hands and said, “Maharaj, it does not seem proper for me to sit here and do nothing while a grand ceremony takes place in Vartal. I wish to come along.”
Maharaj understood Muktanand Swami’s intention and told him to prepare to leave.
Muktanand Swami Injures His Hand
Maharaj arrived in Rojka with an entourage. Kakabhai joined the entourage. Everyone was walking briskly. Muktanand Swami walked while talking about Maharaj. Himā Soni of Gānf requested Muktanand Swami to ride his horse. Swami said he does not wish to sit on a horse; but Himā Soni persisted so Swami rode the horse. A little further, the horse’s leg got stuck in a hole, causing Muktanand Swami to fall off the horse. His right hand was injured from the fall. The devotees carried Muktanand Swami to the Kamiyala mandir built by Ashabhai for the sadhus.
Maharaj heard the news and immediately went to see Muktanand Swami, consoled him, and arranged for a doctor to care for his hand.
Before leaving, Maharaj said, “Swami, now stay here. Do not think about coming to Vartal.” Muktanand Swami understood Maharaj’s wish and decided to rest in Kamiyala.
Maharaj Meets Muktanand Swami in Kamiyala
After Maharaj performed the murti-pratishtha in Vartal, Maharaj became eager to see Muktanand Swami. He went to Kamiyala at Sisa Vanār’s house, where Muktanand Swami was now resting. His hand had healed but still had some weakness. Muktanand Swami was overjoyed seeing Maharaj. Maharaj caressed Muktanand Swami and said, “Swami, Lakshminarayan Dev has been installed in Vartal. All the devotees are pleased. Now, everyone will attained the fruit depending on with what feelings they worship the murtis.”
Muktanand Swami listened peacefully. He had already received news that Maharaj installed his own murti by the name of Harikrishna in the southern shrine. Maharaj showed great eminence during this ceremony, so no one could speak against the installation. The installation of the supreme form worthy of offering upāsanā was installed without any obstacles.
Muktanand Swami Realizes Maharaj Is Distinct from Lakshminarayan
Muktanand Swami was left in deep thought: Maharaj installed his own form (his own murti)! He now understood Maharaj was distinct from Lakshminarayan. Years ago, Maharaj had assumed Ramanand Swami’s form and spoke to him about his own form in Kalwani. Hearing this, he felt peace. However, because of the influence of the gunas, he felt disturbance in his heart from time to time. Maharaj spoke to Swami about his own lilā-charitras for two days in Gadhada, and Swami felt peace. He realized Maharaj to be the manifest form of Krishna. He wrote kirtans regarding this sentiment: ‘Māro mat kahu te sāmbhalo Vrajvāsi Re’.
Maharaj cared deeply for Muktanand Swami because he had endeavored considerably to attain God. However, Maharaj felt that if Muktanand Swami does not understand him to be supreme (distinct from Krishna), then his attainment will be incomplete. He will not attain the supreme Akshardham. Therefore, in Gāmdi, Maharaj spoke to him about his supremacy. While traveling to Dharmapur, Maharaj spoke to him about his supremacy. Nevertheless, Maharaj’s supremacy did not sit well in his heart.
However, after installing Harikrishna Maharaj in Vartal, Muktanand Swami developed the firm conviction about Maharaj’s supremacy - that only the manifest Purushottam Narayan can separate the other deities from his own self and install his own murti. He remains free from worries. Swami was overjoyed with Maharaj’s work. Today, he firmly understood Maharaj to be supreme and the cause of all avatārs. Unable to contain his joy, the words ‘Māiri me to Purushottam var pāyo..’ slipped from his mouth. Maharaj was also pleased hearing these words of Muktanand Swami.
