પ્રસંગ
(૧) 1-620: અક્ષરના વાસી વહાલો આવ્યા અવનિ પર
પડી વસ્તુ કોઈની હાથ ન ઝાલે રાજ
એટલામાં સાધુની મંડળી આવી. મૂળજી બ્રહ્મચારી પણ ભેગા હતા. એક સાધુએ મહારાજ પાસે આવી કેરી મૂકી. એટલે મહારાજે તે સાધુને પૂછ્યું, “આ કેરી ક્યાંથી લાવ્યા?”
ત્યારે તેણે કહ્યું, “અમે આંબા તળે સૂતા હતા તે ઊઠ્યા ત્યારે કેરી પડી હતી એટલે તે લીધી.”
મહારાજ આ સાંભળી રહ્યા. પછી પૂછ્યું, “આ દેશમાં કેરીની છત ખરી?”
ત્યારે ભક્તોએ કહ્યું, “મહારાજ! આ દેશમાં તો આંબા ભાગ્યે જ ઊછરે. અહીં છત કેવી?”
તે સાંભળી મહારાજે પૂછ્યું, “અહીં કોઈના આંબાની આમ પડેલી કેરી લેતાં આંબાનો રખેવાળ દેખે તો શું કરે?”
“એ તો મારે જ. એમ નો લેવા દ્યે.” એક હરિભક્તે કહ્યું.
મહારાજે આ એક કેરીની વાત આટલી કેમ લંબાવી તે કોઈને સમજાયું નહીં. પછી મહારાજે કહ્યું, “જ્યાં કેરીની છત હોય અને રખોપું ન હોય ત્યાંથી પડેલી કેરી લે તે ચોરી ન કહેવાય. પણ જ્યાં અછત હોય, રખોપું હોય ત્યાંથી પડેલી કેરી લેવી તે પણ પાપ! માટે આજથી આપણે સૌ નિયમ લ્યો કે જમીન ઉપર પડેલી વસ્તુ ઉપાડવી નહીં.”
સૌ આ સાંભળી રહ્યા. અજાણતાં, અણસમજ્યા આવાં કેટકેટલાં પાપ આપણે કરતા હોઈશું? જીવનશુદ્ધિ એ સત્સંગનો પાયો છે. મહારાજને આવું અણિશુદ્ધ જીવન ખપતું હતું. સત્સંગ અને જીવનવ્યવહાર એ બંને એક અને અભિન્ન હોવાં જોઈએ. સત્સંગને અનુરૂપ જીવનવ્યવહાર હોવો જોઈએ. આવો પદાર્થપાઠ મહારાજ શિખવાડવા માગતા હતા.

Does Not Take What Does Not Belong to Him
Once, a group of sadhus arrived with Mulji Brahmachari in Kala Talav (during Shriji Maharaj’s vicharan in Kutch region in Samvat 1865). One sadhu placed a mango in front of Maharaj, prompting Maharaj to ask, “Where did you get this mango?”
The sadhu replied, “We were sleeping under a mango tree. When we woke up, we saw some on the ground. We grabbed some.”
Maharaj asked again, “Are mangos plentiful in this region?”
“Maharaj, mangos trees hardly grow in this region, so how can mangos be plentiful?” The devotees replied.
“What would the owner of the mango tree do if someone took mangos from his tree?” Maharaj questioned further.
“He would beat the person.”
Maharaj finally said, “If mangos are plentiful and there is no owner, then taking mangos is not stealing. However, when there is an owner and mangos are not plentiful, taking mangos that fell on the ground is a sin. Take a vow from now on that one should not take anything that fell on the ground.”
The devotees were left contemplating how many times they have sinned in transgressing such a subtle precept. Maharaj’s intent was to promote purity in life.
