Translation
(1) Jyān na karvu joī re santo
Jyān na karvu joī re santo jyān na karvu joī,
O Santo! Do not cause damage (to one’s life) purposely.
(Since these kirtans are about renunciation, this can be interpreted as: do not behave against the codes of renunciation, because doing so would cause damage to one’s reputation.)
Ati ange unmatta hoī re... °ṭek
By behaving arrogantly.
Jo jāye Jāve to kariye kamāṇī, sāchavī lāviye soī;
If one goes to Java to earn money, then one should bring earnings back with protection.
Nahi to beshī rahiye bāraṇe, paṇ gānṭhanī na āviye khoī re... ° 1
Otherwise, stay at home; but do not lose what one has earned.
Jo ḍūbakī diye dariyāmā, motī sāru mane mohī;
If one dives into the ocean to harvest pearls.. .
To lāviye muktā mahāmūlā, paṇ nāviye deh ḍaboī re... ° 2
Then bring back valuable pearls; but do not drown one’s body.
Jo jāy jaḷ Jāhnavī nā’vā, to āviye kilabiṣh dhoī;
If one goes to bathe in the Ganga River, then come back having washed away one’s sins.
Paṇ sāmu na lāviye samajī, pāp parnā te ḍhoī re... ° 3
But do not bring back others’ sins knowingly.
Tem bhakta thaīne bhakti kariye, Haricharaṇe chitta proī;
Similarly, one should engage in devotion with one’s mind engrossed in God.
Niṣhkuḷānand ke’ nar ghar mūkī, na jīviye janam vagoī re... ° 4
Nishkulanand Swami says, “Having renounced, one should not live a disgraced life.”
