Vairāgyane re vighan ghaṇā, tākī rahyā taiyārjī;
There are many obstacles ready to obstruct one on the path of vairāgya.
Mān moṭāī ichchhe mārvā, chhoḍavā† dhan-nārjī... Vairāgya° 1
Ego and desire for greatness are ready to cause harm, as are wealth and women.
Uparnā re abhāvthī, ṭake nahi kadī ṭekjī;
By merely superficial apathy (toward the above), one’s vairāgya will not last.
Pānch vairī pranchaḍ chhe, adhik ekthī ekjī... Vairāgya° 2
Five enemies1 are extremely treacherous, each one worse than the other.
Khātā pītā sūtā jāgatā, vasavu verīne vāsjī;
Whilst eating, drinking, sleeping, remaining awake, one stays among these…
Jotā suṇatā bolatā, teno karavo tapāsjī... Vairāgya° 3
While looking, listening, or speaking, one should examine these enemies [remain away from these].
Tapāsyā vinā je tyāgiyu, hoḍe‡ karī haiyā jorjī;
Eagerly renouncing without examining this…
Te koī dā’ḍe kachavāīne, kāī bhāgashe bhūrjī... Vairāgya° 4
Will one day run away (abandon their renunciation) from being oppressed.
Antar ūnḍā abhāvthī, karīe tan man tyāgjī;
One should renounce one’s body and [whims] of the mind with deep apathy toward them.
Pachhī bharīe pagalā, to na vaṇase vairāgjī... Vairāgya° 5
Then, one should take steps toward renunciation – then their vairāgya will not diminish.
Sāche kāraj sarave sare, kāche rāche nahi Rāmjī;
One achieves their goal if one is genuine; if it is not genuine, God is not pleased.
Niṣhkuḷānand kahe na kījīe, vaṇsamaje e kāmjī... Vairāgya° 6
Nishkulanand Swami says, “Do not do anything without understanding.”
