(1) Kyā tan mānjtā re ek din mittīme mil jānā

Prabhudas

Kyā tan mānjtā re, ek din mittīme mil jānā...

Why do you wash and decorate your body? One day, it will become part of the earth.

Chhelā bankar chale bāgme, dhar paghḍīme fūl,

You walk in the garden arrogantly with a flower in your turban.

Lagā tamāchā motkā, gayā chokḍī bhul... 1

You were slapped by death and lost everything.

Jab tak tel dīyāme battī, jagmag jagmag hoy,

As long as there is oil in the wick, the flame flickers.

Khut gayā tel khatam hoī battī, lechal lechal hoy... 2

When the oil runs out, the flame goes out. There is nothing certain in life.

Hād jale sūkī lakaḍīyā, bāl jale jem ghas,

The bones burn like dry sticks and hair burns like grass.

Kanchan kāyā yū jalegā, koī na āve pās... 3

The lustrous body will burn in this manner and no one will come near you.

Gharkī prīyā jhur jhur ruve, bigaḍ gaī merī joḍī,

The woman of the house (wife) wails that her union was broken.

Prabhudāsjī yu kar bole, jin joḍī tin toḍī... 4

Prabhudas says, just as you were joined (by fate), your union was broken (by fate).
