(1) Guru guru kahat sansārā aise jag bharmāyā hai
In this kirtan, Sadguru Brahmanand Swami explains that many people can be called a guru. Generally, a guru is one who gives knowledge. Mother, father, teacher are all gurus. However, there is a distinction in them. While some only give worldly knowledge, a true guru gives the knowlege of God and eradicates the eternal ignorance, hence ending the cycle of births and deaths.
Guru guru kahat sansārā, aise jag bharmāyā hai;
Everyone in the world speaks about gurus. Thus, the concept is confusing for everyone.
Guru jagat me bahut kahāye, tākā bhed na pāyā hai...
There are many types of gurus in this world. No one understands the distinctions between them.
Māt-pitā pratham guru jāno, dūjā dāī kahāyā hai;
One’s mother and father are the first guru. The second guru are those that raise you.
Tijā guru, tāhīku jāno, jinne nām dharāyā hai.
The third guru is the one who gives you your name.
Chothā guru jehi vidyā dīnā, Akshar gnān sikhāyā hai;
The fourth guru teaches you to read and write (i.e. teachers).
Mālā diyā so guru pānchmā, jehi Hari nām batāyā hai.
The fifth guru gave you a mālā and taught you to chant the name of Bhagwan.
Chhatthā guru so sant kahāve, jin sab bharam miṭāyā hai;
The sixth guru is the Sant who eradicates all forms of ignorance.
Sarjanhār so guru sātmā, āpe hī āp lakhāyā hai.
The seventh guru is Bhagwan himself - the one who created you.
Aise guru binā bhavjal ko pār kou nahi pāyā hai;
Without a [true] guru, no one can cross the ocean of births and deaths.
Brahmānand achal sadguru ke charan kamal lapṭāyā hai.
Brahmanand Swami says, “He surrenders to the lotus feet of a genuine guru.”
