સુદામા
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
સુદામા શ્રીકૃષ્ણ ભગવાનના મિત્ર હતા. સાંદીપનિ ઋષિના આશ્રમમાં સાથે અભ્યાસ કરતા. એક વાર બંને મિત્રો લાકડાં ભેગાં કરવા વનમાં ગયા હતા. ત્યાં અતિવૃષ્ટિ થઈ અને અંધારું થઈ ગયેલું. બંને મિત્રો રક્ષણ માટે ઝાડ પર ચડ્યા. ઋષિપત્નિએ તેમને ચણા આપ્યા હતા તે સુદામા ભૂખ લાગી ત્યારે બધા ખાઈ ગયા અને કૃષ્ણ ભૂખ્યા રહ્યા. ભગવાન સાથે આટલું કપટ કર્યું માટે તેઓ ખૂબ ગરીબ રહ્યા. એક વાર તેમણે ભગવાનને પ્રેમથી મુઠ્ઠી તાંદુલ આપ્યા. તેના બગલામાં કૃષ્ણે તેમને અઢળક સંપત્તિ આપી અને દરિદ્રતા ટાળી નાંખી.

Sudāmā was a friend of Krishna when Krishna was studying at Sāndipani Rishi’s āshram. Once, they were sent to collect sticks from the woods. A storm ensued and it became dark. The two friends climbed a tree for protection from the rain. The rishi’s wife had given them chickpeas to eat. However, Sudāmā ate them all while Krishna remained hungry. Because of this deceit, he remained poor. Once, he went to Dwārikā and gave Krishna a fistful of rice. In return, Krishna granted him bountiful wealth and relieved him of his poverty.
