ઉપરિચરવસુ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
રાજા ઉપરિચરવસુ સ્વાયંભૂવંશના ઉત્તાનપાદ કુળમાં જન્મ્યા હતા. તેઓ ઇન્દ્રના મિત્ર અને ભગવાન વિષ્ણુના પરમ ભક્ત ધર્માત્મા હતા. દેવગુરુ બૃહસ્પતિ તેમના ગુરુ હતા અને તેમની પાસેથી જ ઉપરિચરવસુએ પંચરાત્ર શાસ્ત્રનું અધ્યયન કર્યું હતું. તેમણે ભગવાન નારાયણનાં વરથી સમગ્ર પૃથ્વીનું સામ્રાજ્ય પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું હતું. તેઓ હંમેશાં ભોજન પ્રથમ ભગવાનને ત્યારબાદ માતા-પિતા અને બ્રાહ્મણોને અર્પણ કરીને ગ્રહણ કરતા.
સત્યનિષ્ઠ એવા ઉપરિચરવસુ હિંસાભાવથી રહિત, પવિત્ર અને ઉદાર હતા. તેઓ સકામ, નૈમિત્તિક યજ્ઞ વૈષ્ણવ શાસ્ત્રોક્ત વિધિ પ્રમાણે જ કરતા. તેમણે એક વાર અશ્વમેધ યજ્ઞ કર્યો, તેમાં એક પણ પશુની હિંસા વિના જંગલમાં ઉપલબ્ધ ફળ-ફૂલ વગેરેથી દેવતાઓને ભાગ આપ્યો હતો. ઋષિના શાપથી તેમને એક વખત રસાતળમાં જવું પડ્યું હતું, પરંતુ ભગવાન નારાયણના અખંડ જપથી ભગવાનની કૃપા વડે પુનઃ પૃથ્વીલોકમાં આવ્યા અને ત્યાંથી તેમને બ્રહ્મલોકમાં પરમગતિ પ્રાપ્ત થઈ.

King Uparicharvasu was born in the family of Uttānpād of the Swāyambhu dynasty. He was a friend of Indra and a great devotee of Vishnu. His guru was Bruhaspati, from whom he studied the Panchrātra scripture. With a boon granted by Nārāyan, he acquired the reign of the whole earth. Before eating, he always offered meals to God, his parents, and brāhmins.
Uparicharvasu was honest, avoided killing, pious, and benevolent. He always performed yagnas according to the Vaishnav traditions found in scriptures. Once, he performed a yagna in which no single animal was killed. Instead, he sacrificed various flowers and plants found in jungles.
Once, he was sent to rasātal (one of the pātāls) because of a curse from a rishi. However, he constantly chanted God’s name and due to his grace, he returned back on the earth.
