King Janak

People in Shastras

Nimi was the second son of Swāyambhuv Manu. He had performed a yagna. He died because of Vashishtha’s curse. Since there was no king in their kingdom, the rishis extracted his body and conjured a son. He was called Janak. Since he was born not from an intact body, he was known as videhi. He populated the city Mithilā, which is between Bangāl and Bihār. All of the kings that followed were given the title ‘Janak’. Shukdevji saw the elevated state of King Janak and accepted him as his guru.

Sulabhā, an ascetic woman, came to test King Janak called Dharmadhwaj. Janak told her, “I have gained wisdom from my guru; therefore, I will not become infatuated with you.” Once, two brāhmins came to ask Janak why he was referred to as videhi. Janak said, “Just as your mind was focused on the glass of oil because you feared death upon spilling it and having your head severed, my mind remains on God in every activity due to the fear of death.”

King Janak known as Jandev listened to Ashtāvakra’s kathā daily. To show the other rishis his elevated state, Ashtāvakra set Mithila on an illusionary fire. Janak said, “This Mithila city is burning but nothing of mine is burning.” Despite being active in social duties as a king, he remained aloof of all activities.
