કામદેવ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
કામદેવ કામભોગની ઇચ્છાના દેવ છે. કામદેવની પત્ની રતિ, મિત્ર વસંત, વાહન કોયલ અને અસ્ત્ર ફૂલનું ધનુષ્ય બાણ છે. તેની ધજા ઉપર માછલીનું ચિહ્ન છે. જ્યારે દક્ષપુત્રી સતીનો પરલોકવાસ થયો ત્યારે શિવજીએ વિચાર કર્યો કે હવે વિવાહ ન કરવો. આવો નિશ્ચય કરી સમાધિ લગાવી. તેવામાં તારકાસુરે તપ કરી એવું વરદાન માગ્યું કે મારું મોત શિવજીના પુત્રથી થાય અને તે પછી તેણે દેવતાઓને સતાવવા માંડ્યા. આથી દુઃખી થઈ દેવતાઓએ શિવની સમાધિનો ભંગ કરવા કહ્યું. કામદેવે શિવની સમાધિ તોડવા બાણ ચલાવ્યાં. આથી ગુસ્સે થઈ શિવજીએ તેને ભસ્મ કરી દીધો. આથી તેની સ્ત્રી રતિ વિલાપ કરવા લાગી. શિવજીએ પ્રસન્ન થઈ કહ્યું કે કામદેવ હવે અંગ રહિત રહેશે અને દ્વારકામાં કૃષ્ણને ઘેર તેનો જન્મ થશે. ત્યારબાદ કૃષ્ણ અને રુક્મિણીના પુત્ર પ્રદ્યુમ્ન કરીકે કામદેવનો જન્મ થયો.

Kāmdev is the deity of lust. His wife is Rati, his friend is Vasant, his vehicle is a cuckoo (koyal), and his weapon is a bow and arrow made of flowers. His flag bears the symbol of a fish. When Sati, the daughter of Daksha, died, Shivji decided not to marry again and he resorted to deep meditation. In the meantime, a demon named Tārkāsur performed penance and gained a boon that he would only die by the son of Shivji. With this boon, he began to terrorize the devtās. The miserable devtās asked Kāmdev to disturb Shivji’s meditation. Kāmdev shot Shivji with his arrows. Shivji became angry and burned Kāmdev to ashes. His wife Rati started to wail. Shivji said that Kāmdev will be born to Krishna in Dwārikā. Thus, Kāmdev was born to Krishna and Rukmini as Pradyumna.
