શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
કર્ણ કુંતાજીનો પહેલો પુત્ર હતો જે દુર્વાસાના મંત્રી સૂર્યદેવ થકી પ્રાપ્ત થયો હતો. કુંતાજી કુવારાં હોવાના કારણે તેમણે કર્ણનો નદીમાં વહેતો મૂકી ત્યાગ કર્યો હતો. નિઃસંતાન અધિરથ નામના સારથીએ નદીમાં કર્ણને જોઈ, પોતાની પત્ની રાધા સાથે મોટો કર્યો. તે દ્રોણાચાર્ય પાસે ધનુરવિદ્યા પ્રાપ્ત કરવા આવ્યો હતો પણ દ્રોણાચાર્યે તેનો સ્વીકાર કર્યો નહીં. પછી પરશુરામ પાસે બ્રાહ્મણના વેશે ધનુરવિદ્યા પ્રાપ્ત કરી. દુર્યોધને તેને મિત્ર તરીકે સ્વીકાર્યો હતો અને અંગ દેશનો રાજા બનાવ્યો હતો, ત્યારે તે દુર્યોધનનો ઋણી બની ગયો અને દુર્યોધનને અધર્મી જાણવા છતાં તેનો ત્યાગ ન કરી શક્યો. તેને અર્જુન સાથે વૈર હતું અને કુંતાને વચન આપ્યું હતું કે તેઓ યુદ્ધમાં અર્જુન સિવાય કોઈ પણ તેના નાના ભાઈઓનો વધ નહીં કરે. યુદ્ધમાં તેનું પૈડું ખાડામાં ફસી ગયું ત્યારે તેને પાંડવોના મામા શલ્ય, જે તેના સારથી બન્યા હતા, તેમને પૈડું કાઢવા કહ્યું પણ તેમને ના પાડી. કર્ણ પોતે પૈડું કાઢવા ઉતર્યો ત્યારે શ્રીકૃષ્ણે અર્જુનને કહ્યું તે તેનું માથું બાણથી કાપી નાંખ. અર્જુને નિઃશસ્ત્ર કર્ણનો વધ કર્યો. કર્ણ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા પછી જ પાંડવોને ખબર પડી કે કર્ણ તેમનો મોટો ભાઈ હતો.

Karna was the first son of Kunti, who she obtained from using Durvasa’s mantra to invoke Suryadev. Because she was not married at this time, she put the newborn in a basket and set it flowing down a river. A charioteer named Adhirath, who was childless, found the child and raised him with his wife Rādhā. He asked Dronāchārya to accept him as his pupil to learn archery but Dronāchārya refused. He then learned archery from Parshurām posing as a brāhmin. Duryodham made him his best friend and made Karna the king of Ang. Therefore, he became indebted to Duryodhan for life; though knowing Duryodhan to be unrighteous, he was not able to leave him. He had enmity toward Arjun. He promised Kuntā that he would not kill any of his younger brothers except Arjun. During the war, a wheel of his chariot got stuck in a ditch. He asked Shalya, who was his charioteer and also the maternal uncle of the Pāndavas, to get the wheel out. Shalya refused. Karna stepped down from the charioteer to move the wheel out. At this point, Krishna told Arjun to shoot an arrow and sever his head. Arjun did so and killed Karna while he was unarmed.
