સુગ્રીવ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
સુગ્રીવ ઋક્ષરાજ વાનરના બે માંહેનો નાનો પુત્ર અને વાલીનો ભાઈ હતો. વાલી અને સુગ્રીવ બંને ઘણા વખત સુધી સંપીને સાથે રહ્યા, પણ એક માયાવી રાક્ષસ સાથેના યુદ્ધને લીધે બંનેમાં વિખવાદ થઈ પડ્યો. વાલીએ સુગ્રીવનો કિષ્કિંધામાંથી દેશનિકાલ કર્યો. સુગ્રીવ હનુમાન વગેરે સચિવો સહિત ઋષ્યમૂક પર્વત ઉપર રહેવા માંડ્યા. સીતાની શોધમાં રામ-લક્ષ્મણ ત્યાં આવ્યા અને સુગ્રીવ સાથે મૈત્રી કરી. રામે વાલીનો સંહાર કર્યો અને સુગ્રીવની મદદથી જ સમુદ્ર પર સેતું બાંધી લંકા પર વિજય મેળવ્યો. અંતે રામ સ્વધામ જતા હતા ત્યારે સુગ્રીવ પણ અંગદને કિષ્કિંધાની ગાદી પર બેસાડી રામચંદ્ર સાથે ધામમાં ગયા.

Sugriv was the younger of the two sons of Ruksharāj. He and his older brother Vāli lived united for many years. Once, a demon came to fight with them. The battle ensued for many days and ended with Vāli and the demon entering a cave. Sugriv remained outside waiting for Vāli to return. He heard a scream and thought that the demon must have killed his brother. He blocked the opening of the cave with a rock so the demon does not escape. Then, Sugriv ruled the monkeys. Vāli returned and found Sugriv sitting on his throne. He angrily beat Sugriv and banished him from Kishkindhā.
Sugriv, Hanuman, and others found a home in the Rushyamuk mountain. Ram and Lakshman arrived there when they were searching for Sitāji. They befriended Sugriv and the other monkeys. Rām killed Vāli and reinstated Sugriv and the king of the monkeys. With Sugriv’s help, Rām build a bridge to cross the ocean to Lankā. When Rām decided to revert back to his abode, Sugriv crowned Angad the king of Kishkindhā and he also left with Rām to his abode.
