ધૃતરાષ્ટ્ર
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
ધૃતરાષ્ટ્ર વ્યાસ અને અંબિકાના પુત્ર હતા. તેઓ હંસ નામના ગંધર્વનો અંશાવતાર હતા. તેઓ જન્મથી જ અંધ હતા. ભીષ્મે તેમનાં લગ્ન ગાંધાર દેશની કુમારિકા ગાંધારી સાથે કરાવેલાં. તે થકી તેને દુર્યોધન, દુઃશાસન આદિ ૧૦૦ પુત્ર અને દુઃશલા નામે એક કન્યા થયેલી. ધૃતરાષ્ટ્રના ભાઈ પાંડુ રાજાના મૃત્યુ બાદ તેઓ હસ્તીનાપુરની ગાદી પર આવ્યા હતા. તેઓ સમજુ હોવા છતાં પુત્રસ્નેહથી વશ થઈ પોતાના પુત્ર અધર્મ કરે છે એમ જાણવા છતાં કાંઈ બોલી શક્યા નહીં. પુત્રસ્નેહને લઈ તેમણે પાંડવોને ઘણો અન્યાય કરેલો. જ્યારે યુદ્ધમાં પોતાના બધા પુત્રો મરાયા ત્યારે અત્યંત શોકાતુર બન્યા, પછી થોડાં વર્ષ પાંડવો સાથે રહી વનમાં તપ કરવા જતા રહ્યા અને ત્યાં જ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા હતા.

Dhritrāshtra was the son of Vyās and Ambikā. He was the incarnation of a gāndharva (celestial being) named Hansa. He was blind from birth. Bhishma had him married to Gāndhāri from the kingdom of Gāndhār. The two had Duryodhan, Duhshāsan and 98 other sons and one daughter named Duhshalā. After his brother Pāndu died, he became king of Hastināpur. Though possessing understanding, he allowed his sons to act against dharma because of his love toward them. Moreover, because of his love for his son Duryodhan, he acted unjustly toward the Pāndavas. After his sons were killed in the Mahābhārat war, he became grief-struck. He lived with the Pāndavas for a few years, then retired to the foreset where he died.
