Mulji Brahmachāri

Mulji Brahmachāri’s name before initiation was Jagannāth. He was born in Samvat 1822 to an Audichya brahmin family in the village Machhiyāv (near Sānand) in the Amdāvād district. From childhood, he was inclined to bhakti and was detached from worldly life. When the talk of his marriage began, he clearly said no and renounced his home. Eventually, he found Rāmānand Swāmi in Loj and obtained dikshā from him and was named Mukundānand Varni. People called him Mulji Brahmachāri.

When Shriji Maharaj took over the reigns of the sampradāy, he kept him in his personal service. He practiced eight-fold celibacy. He served Maharaj from morning, when Maharaj woke up and brushed his teeth, till night when Maharaj went to sleep. Once, Maharaj excommunicated him without any fault. Moreoever, he told him to abstain from eating sweet and oily foods. Yet, he did not develop any aversion toward Maharaj. He was taken back into Satsang and he instantly went back to serving Maharaj. Because he was free of any worldly desires, Maharaj only accepted his service. He followed Maharaj like a shadow and always perceived divinity in all of Maharaj’s human-like actions. Maharaj has praised him in many Vachanamruts. In the month of Bhadarva of Samvat 1904, he left his mortal body in Gadhada. Brahmaswarup Shastriji Maharaj installed his murti in the first shrine in Sarangpur mandir.
