After celebrating the Chaitri festival of 1879 on April 6, 1879 (Chaitra sud 15, VS 1935), Acharya Mahārāj proceeded to Ānand accompanied with Pavitrānand Swāmi. Bhagatji Mahārāj also attended this festival and he stayed nearby for two months in Vartāl.
There was a custom from the time of Bhagwān Swāminārāyan of chanting the dhun of ‘Nar-Nārāyan, Swāminārāyan’ after the evening ārti. Some of the newer sadhus and devotees had, however, changed this tradition and started chanting the ‘Swāminārāyan, Swāminārāyan’ dhun instead. Pavitrānand Swāmi insisted on the old tradition and chanted ‘Nar-Nārāyan, Swāminārāyan’ on his own.
Once, during dhun, Pavitrānand Swāmi shouted, “Why are you all not singing the traditional dhun that was started in the time of Mahārāj?”
“Before a camel dies, it still looks towards Mārwād,” boldly replied Aksharpurush Swāmi, implying that it cannot leave its habits despite facing death.
This blatant insult hurt Pavitrānand Swāmi severely. As no one, not even Acharya Mahārāj had stopped the sadhus or told them off, he felt that everyone had consented to this. This incident shocked him so much that he fell ill. The following day, Pavitrānand Swāmi returned to Vartāl from Ānand with his attendant sadhu. He said to his attendant sadhu, “Please go and see if you can find a great sadguru. If you can, please ask him to come and discourse to me.” The attendant sadhu went out to find Prāgji Bhakta. He relayed this to Pavitrānand Swāmi and said, “Prāgji Bhakta is speaking to a group of sadhus and devotees in the assembly. I will call him if you want.”
Pavitrānand Swāmi had Prāgji Bhakta called and requested, “Prāgji, please discourse some important Vachanāmruts so that I can be at peace.”
Bhagatji knew what had taken place and asked Vignāndās Swāmi to read Vachanāmrut Panchālā 3. He then began his explanation of this Vachanāmrut. Pavitrānand Swāmi was delighted by Bhagatji’s explanation and said, “Prāgji, what you have said is correct. The only true sadhu I have seen is Gunātitānand Swāmi. I have had darshan of the 500 paramhansas; however, none of them can be compared to Gunātitānand Swāmi in terms of saintliness. Truly, I have seen only one like him…
“Prāgji Bhakta, undoubtedly, you have gained the unique pleasure of such a sadhu because you have pleased him by serving him by thought, word, and deed. He showered his abundant grace upon you and helped you to perfect ekāntik dharma. I am totally convinced about this because there is no other devotee as humble as you. I recall that in the year 1865 (VS 1921), I decided to never ever sit with you again. You replied, ‘If Gunātitānand Swāmi is Mul Akshar, I want to sit with you and discourse.’ Now the tables have turned. You have so much authority, that you can command me. This is all due to Gunātitānand Swāmi…

સં. ૧૯૩૫માં ચૈત્રી પૂનમનો સમૈયો વરતાલમાં ઊજવી આચાર્ય ભગવત્પ્રસાદજી મહારાજ આણંદ આવેલા. તેઓ સાથે વરિષ્ઠ સદ્ગુરુ પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામી પણ હતા. એક વાર સંધ્યા આરતી બાદ સૌ “સ્વામિનારાયણ.... સ્વામિનારાયણ...” એવી ધૂન કરી રહેલા ત્યારે પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામીએ જૂની પ્રથા મુજબ “નરનારાયણ... સ્વામિનારાયણ...” ધૂન ચાલુ કરી. તેઓને નવો સુધારો ખટકતો હતો. તેથી તેઓ જૂની પરંપરા મુજબ ઉચ્ચ સ્વરે એકલા ધૂન કરવા લાગ્યા. આવું રોજ બનતું. તેથી કેટલાકને થયું: “આ ડોસો રોજ પોતાની જીદ છોડતો નથી. માટે એક વખત તો કહેવું પડશે.” એમ સૌએ નક્કી કર્યું.
એક દિવસ આરતી બાદ ધૂન શરૂ થઈ એટલે પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામી મોટેથી બોલ્યા, “મહારાજ છતાંની (સમયની) જે ધૂન ચાલે છે તે પ્રથા કેમ તોડો છો?”
તે સાંભળી અક્ષરપુરુષદાસ ભંડારી બોલ્યા, “ઊંટ મરે છે તે પહેલાં મારવાડ સામું જુએ છે, તેમ તમે પણ કરો છો. તે હજુ પણ અમદાવાદની વાસના મટતી નથી?” આવું અપમાન કરનારને કોઈએ વાર્યા નહીં. એટલું જ નહીં, આચાર્ય મહારાજે પણ તેમને કાંઈ ઠપકો આપ્યો નહીં. તેથી પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામીને લાગ્યું કે: “આમાં બધાની સંમતિ છે.” તેથી તેઓને હાડોહાડ અપમાન લાગી ગયું. તેઓ વરતાલ પરત આવી ગયા. પણ હૃદયદાહ શમ્યો નહીં. તેથી સેવકને કહ્યું, “કોઈ મોટા સદ્ગુરુ હોય તો વાતો કરવા બોલાવો.”
સેવકે ભાળ કાઢી લાવતાં કહ્યું, “સભામંડપમાં તો પ્રાગજી ભગત વાતો કરે છે. કહો તો તેમને બોલાવું.”
પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામીએ હા પાડી એટલે સેવક ભગતજી મહારાજને બોલાવી લાવ્યો. સાથે દામોદર શેઠ, વિજ્ઞાનદાસ સ્વામી, બેચર ભગત પણ હતા. ભગતજી મહારાજ પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામીને દંડવત્ કરવા લાગ્યા ત્યારે તે રખાવીને પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામીએ કહ્યું, “પ્રાગજી, સારાં સારાં વચનામૃતો કઢાવી વાતો કર કે જેથી શાંતિ થાય.”
તે સમયે ભગતજી મહારાજે વિજ્ઞાનદાસ સ્વામી પાસે આ વચનામૃત પંચાળા ૩જું વંચાવ્યું અને ખૂબ વાતો કરી. પ્રાગજી ભક્તની પરાવાણીનો પ્રવાહ અટક્યો ત્યારે પવિત્રાનંદ સ્વામી બોલવા લાગ્યા, “મેં પાંચસો પરમહંસોનાં દર્શન કર્યાં છે, પણ ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામીના જેવી સાધુતા મેં કોઈનામાં જોઈ નથી... એ સાધુનો તારા પર અસાધારણ રાજીપો છે... તારા જેવો નિર્માની ભક્ત પણ બીજો કોઈ નહીં. નહીં તો મેં સં. ૧૯૨૧ની સાલે એવો ઠરાવ કર્યો હતો કે આજથી તારા ભેળું બેસવું નથી. ત્યારે તેં પણ મને કહ્યું હતું કે જો ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામી મૂળ અક્ષર હોય તો તમારા ભેળા જ બેસીને કથાવાર્તા કરવી છે. તે આજ તું મને આજ્ઞા કરે છે એવી જે તારી સત્તા, તે તો ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામીના પ્રતાપથી જ છે... તેં ગુણાતીતનો ખરો વંશ રાખ્યો છે... મને આજે અપાર શાંતિ થઈ ગઈ છે.”
