Gadhada III-17: The Story of Bharatji

Nirupan

December 28, 1956. At night on the train to Madras, Yogiji Mahārāj called the yuvaks and had Vachanāmrut Gadhadā III-17 read and said, “Mahārāj says the story of Bharatji is miraculous. What miracle is he speaking of? Bharatji renounced his kingdom, loved ones, and he was the son of Rushabhdev Bhagwān; yet, he became bound by an insignificant deer because of his compassion. One should know when to show compassion - it should be ordinary and shown only when necessary. One should not develop affection because of compassion. It is a sin for a devotee of God to lodge their mind in anything except God. If the Motā-Purush is genuine, then he would not be bound by anything and would not let others bind to anything.

“Swāmi was the mahant of Junāgadh mandir. He always kept his jholi hanging on a peg in case Mahārāj called him to Gadhadā by letter. He could instantly grab his jholi and leave. Nishkulānand Swāmi handled the affairs of Dholerā mandir but said it was as if the Sālemāl mountain was thrown on him. One should engage in affairs because of God’s command, join in the affairs fully, but one should not become attached to it and remain free. Affairs should not become binding. That itself is an elevated state.

“If one has thoughts of social affairs, the world, then desires have not been eradicated. When desires have been eradicated, then only thoughts of God remain. Thoughts of social affairs will make one forget God’s murti and that is a great obstacle in liberation.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 2/174]
