Bearing the Blame for Others’ Mistake

1980. The London devotees wished to organize a special outing with Swamishri in order to spend some time with him. Accordingly, a picnic was arranged at Epping Forest. Devotees had gathered in large numbers to make the most of this opportunity.

It was planned that Swamishri would complete a few padhrāmanis on the way before coming to Epping Forest. The sadhus began the assembly and awaited Swamishri’s arrival. They waited, but there was no news of Swamishri. The fact was Swamishri had been caught up with more padhrāmanis than he could comfortably manage.

In the assembly, everyone, including some BBC reporters, were anxiously waiting for Swamishri. The reporters were hoping to cover the assembly for their India Dances and Festivities show. But soon the reporters’ patience ran out, and they left.

Half an hour later, Swamishri arrived. I was with him. As soon as he sat down in the assembly, a drizzle began. Someone quickly sheltered Swamishri with an umbrella. Then he was asked to sit on a swing hanging from a nearby tree. As it started raining heavily, the assembly dispersed and Swamishri went inside a nearby school hall.

Everyone’s expectations and the excitement of the trip were belied. They were supposed to spend the whole day with Swamishri. But it was not to be as the senior devotees had taken Swamishri on padhrāmanis. Being hurt, some criticized the seniors among themselves. “They should’ve known. No padhrāmanis should have been kept in the first place... We had just about managed to get the BBC to come and even they left... Nobody cares about ordinary devotees...”

By evening, these words of criticism had reached Swamishri’s ears.

The next day at the mandir in Islington, Swamishri asked for the microphone after his morning puja. He asked a sadhu to open Vachanamrut Gadhada I-16.

Swamishri began his discourse with an apology. “Sorry. Firstly, I would like to apologize for yesterday. It was my fault. I am to blame for arranging the extra padhrāmanis and thus turning up late for the assembly. It’s no one else’s fault – so please, forgive me.”

Swamishri’s words were so full of love and regret that every single devotee’s heart was pierced. The critics realized their mistake in airing their disappointment in public. Those who (in actual fact) had organized the extra padhrāmanis in the first place were stunned to hear Swamishri bear the blame for their mistake.

Many shed tears of regret in the assembly that morning.

બીજાનો વાંક પોતે આઢી લીધો

લંડન સત્સંગમંડળે ૧૯૮૦માં સ્વામીશ્રીની ઉપસ્થિતિમાં એક સુંદર વન-મહોત્સવ થાય તેવું આયોજન કર્યું હતું. આ માટે સૌએ Epping Forestમાં સભા ગોઠવી હતી. ખૂબ મોટી સંખ્યામાં સૌ પધાર્યા હતા.

સ્વામીશ્રી પધરામણી કરીને અહીં પધારવાના હતા. તેથી સંતોએ સભા ચાલુ કરી દીધી. પરંતુ સમય પસાર થતો રહ્યો. સ્વામીશ્રીના હજુ કોઈ સમાચાર ન હતા. તે તરફ પધરામણીઓ વધતી રહી હતી. અને આ તરફ બી.બી.સી.ના રિપોર્ટરો તથા સમગ્ર સભા સ્વામીશ્રીની પ્રતીક્ષા કરી રહ્યા હતા. B.B.C.ને ‘Indian Dance & Festivities’ કાર્યક્રમ માટે કવરેજ લેવું હતું, પરંતુ તેમની શ્રદ્ધા ખૂટી ને સૌ ચાલ્યા ગયા.

એ પછી અડધા કલાકે સ્વામીશ્રી પધાર્યા. હું સાથે જ હતો. હજુ સ્વામીશ્રી બેસે ત્યાં તો ઝરમર ઝરમર વરસાદ શરૂ થયો. સ્વામીશ્રીના માથે છત્રી ધરી હતી. એક વૃક્ષ નીચે બાંધેલા હિંડોળા પર સ્વામીશ્રી બિરાજ્યા. એવામાં વરસાદ ધોધમાર તૂટી પડ્યો. સભા વિખેરાઈ. સ્વામીશ્રી નજીકમાં જ આવેલી શાળાના હૉલમાં પધાર્યા. બધા જ સત્સંગીઓનો પર્યટન કરવાનો ઉત્સાહ ભાંગી પડ્યો હતો. સૌને લાગ્યું કે આખી સવાર સ્વામીશ્રીનો લાભ મળે તેમ હતું, પણ કેટલાક મોવડીઓ સ્વામીશ્રીને પધરામણીએ લઈ ગયા, તેથી બધો જ લાભ ગુમાવ્યો છે. આથી કેટલાક લોકો એ મોવડીઓ માટે જેમ તેમ બોલવા લાગ્યા કે, “તેમણે ધ્યાન રાખવું જોઈએ. આવો કાર્યક્રમ હોય ત્યારે બાપાની પધરામણી રખાય નહીં... માંડ માંડ B.B.C.વાળા આવેલા, તે પણ જતા રહ્યા... કોઈને હરિભક્તોની પડી નથી...” વગેરે.

આ વાતો સાંજે સ્વામીશ્રીના કાને આવી. તેથી બીજે દિવસે સવારે ઈસલીંગ્ટન મંદિરના હૉલમાં પૂજા બાદ કથા થઈ રહી ને સ્વામીશ્રીને માઇક ધર્યું, ત્યારે સ્વામીશ્રી એક સંતને કહે, “ગ. પ્ર. ૧૬મું કાઢો!” તેમણે એ વચનામૃત કાઢ્યું ને વાંચવા લાગ્યા. સ્વામીશ્રીએ નિરૂપણની શરૂઆત જ આવી રીતે કરી, “પ્રથમ તો એ વાત કરવાની કે ગઈકાલે જે બન્યું તેમાં વાંક ગુરુનો જ છે! અમે જ પધરામણી ગોઠવેલી ને અમારાથી જ બહુ મોડું થયું હતું. એમાં કોઈનો કોઈ વાંક નથી. માટે માફ કરજો.”

સ્વામીશ્રી એટલા ભાવપૂર્વક બોલતા હતા કે હરિભક્તોનાં હૈયાં વીંધાઈ ગયાં. જે આવેશમાં આવીને બોલનારા હતા તેમને અંતર્દ્રષ્ટિ થઈ. કેટલાય હરિભક્તોની આંખમાં પશ્ચાત્તાપનાં આંસુ હતાં. સભામાં અલગ પ્રકારનો સન્નાટો છવાઈ ગયો. અને પધરામણી કરાવનાર એ મોવડીઓને પણ ભૂલ સમજાઈ કે આપણો વાંક સ્વામીશ્રીએ ઓઢી લીધો છે! તેમને પણ ખેદ થયો, ને વાત થાળે પડી ગઈ.

અન્યનો વાંક પોતાને માથે લઈ લેવાની ગુણાતીત રીત ગુણાતીત સિવાય બીજે ક્યાં મળે? સ્વામીશ્રીની આ અદ્‌ભુત મહિમા દ્રષ્ટિની પાછળ એમની અહંશૂન્યતા પ્રતિબિંબિત થઈ રહી હતી.
