Sarangpur-1: Conquering the Mind

Nirupan

Samvat 1997, Sarangpur. On the same day, Nirgundās Swāmi read Vachanāmrut Sarangpur 1, 8, and 9. He thus spoke eloquently about winning over the mind, saying, “When I was Kothāri of Mumbai Mandir in Samvat 1953 [1897 CE], Brahmaswarup Shri Prāgji Bhakta wrote to me. He explained that by keeping the mind engrossed in the nine types of devotion, unrighteous thoughts would not arise. Māhāraj has shown no other way to win over the mind except for devotion.”

Uddhavjibhai of Botād then asked a question, “When can you say the mind has been won?”

Nirgundās Swāmi smiled and said, “The mind gets in the way of keeping a sense of flawlessness in God or the Satpurush. However, if one does not harbor any suspicions or doubts, then the mind is said to have been won over. This is the only way to avoid unrighteous thoughts in the mind. If one has sinned anywhere, then that sin is burnt away through the pilgrimage place in the form of the Sant. However, if one has sinned in relation to the form of the Sant, then that is etched in iron. One has not won over the mind if one still has doubts and suspicions, or sees flaws in the Ekāntik Sant of God. Based on this, one should think about Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-14 and Vartāl 1. A mango tree is a mango tree and a neem tree is a neem tree; such conviction will never change even if someone tries to change it. In the same way, if one has firm conviction in God or the Ekāntik Satpurush, one is said to have won over the mind.”
