Gadhada I-56: Hollow Stones

Nirupan

June 2, 1965, Adās. During the evening discourse at the house of Chunibhāi, Yogiji Mahārāj had Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-56 read and said, “The four types of devotees, ārta, jignāsu, arthārthi and gnāni, all have the same conviction but their understanding differs. Of theses, why is a gnāni the best? He behaves as brahmaswarup, not as the body; whereas, desires and imperfections remain in the other three.

“Perceiving flaws in others is a deficiency. To keep desires other than God is a great deficiency. Now, [Mahārāj] describes the flaw from his own virtues. If one thinks, ‘There is no one who possesses the same level of detachment as me.’ This is arrogance of one’s virtue - a mistake of five 8-sher in one maund. It is a grave flaw and he will not progress, because of the thought of ego.

“On the other hand, [a true aspirant] will not remain complacent, but will continue to serve. He keeps strength of his thought. One who bows down to all is liked by all. To tolerate is the characteristic of a sadhu. Do not keep any trace of arrogance. Chunibhāi Master is humble. He serves twice as much. One must look within one’s heart. Ego is one and those who yearn for it are many; therefore, problems occur.

“Arrogance may appear good from the outside, but when difficulties arise, then one feels, ‘I cannot cope with this.’ The devotion of one who has no arrogance may not be superficially apparent. One who is humble is powerful. One who behaves humbly is the best. If you shout at children, their minds are not affected. Similarly, one should act in the same way as a child, putting one’s ego aside.”

† 40 sher = 1 maund. Hence, 5 × 8 sher = 1 maund. Subtracting 40 sher from 1 maund is equivalent to 0. (Swāmini Vāto: 3/71) Thus, Swamishri is explaining that arrogance of one’s virtue makes that virtue null.
