શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
ધ્રુવ ઉત્તાનપાદ રાજા અને સુનીતિના પુત્ર હતા. રાજાની બીજી પત્ની સુરુચિ માનીતી હોવાથી તેનો પુત્ર ઉત્તમ રાજાને વધુ પ્રિયા હતો. એક વાર ઉત્તમ રાજાના ખોળામાં બેઠો હતો. તે દરમ્યાન ધ્રુવ ત્યાં આવ્યો. તેને પણ રાજાના ખોળામાં બેસવું હતું, પરંતુ ઓરમાન માતા સુરુચિએ તુચ્છકારીને કાઢી મૂક્યો. આથી તે દુઃખી થઈ માતા પાસે આવ્યો અને વાત કરી. માતાએ તેને ભગવાનના ખોળામાં બેસવાની વાત કરી. આથી પાંચ વર્ષનો ધ્રુવ વનમાં તપ કરવા નીકળ્યો. નારદજીએ તેને તપની રીત અને મંત્ર શીખવ્યો. તેમના તપથી ભગવાન રાજી થઈ પ્રગટ થયા ત્યારે ધ્રુવ કાંઈ બોલી શક્યો નહીં. તેથી ભગવાને શંખ તેના ગાલ પર અડાડ્યો. પછી તેણે ભગવાનની સ્તુતિ કરી અને ભગવાને તેને અવિચળ સ્થાન આપ્યું. ત્યારબાદ તેણે ૩૬,૦૦૦ વર્ષ રાજ્ય કર્યું અને પછી દેહનો ત્યાગ કરી ધ્રુવમંડળમાં ગયો.

Dhruv was the son of King Uttānpād and Suniti. His father had another wife named Suruchi, who was his favorite; therefore, Uttānpād favored Suruchi’s son Uttam more. Once, Uttam was sitting in his father’s lap. Dhruv also desired to sit in his father’s lap. However, his stepmother Suruchi derided him and sent him away. Hurt by his stepmother, Dhruv went to his mother and told her what had happened. His mother said to go to the forest to please God and sit in his lap instead. Therefore, the 5 year old Dhruv left for the forest. He accosted Nāradji, who taught him the mantra to repeat during his penance. God was pleased with his penance and appeared before him. Dhruv wanted to extol God’s greatness but words would not form on his lips. God touched Dhruv’s cheek with his conch shell endowing Dhruv with the wisdom to speak the glory of God. God gave him a fixed spot. He ruled for 36,000 years and discarded his body by migrating to the Dhruv constellation.
