શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
ભીમસેન પાંડુરાજા અને કુંતીનો બીજો પુત્ર હતો. તે દુર્વાસાએ આપેલા મંત્રના પ્રભાવથી અને વાયુદેવના અંશથી જન્મેલો હોવાથી વાયુપુત્ર પણ કહેવાય છે. તે નાનપણથી જ બળવાન હતો અને તેનો જઠરાગ્નિ અતિશય પ્રદીપ્ત હતો. એક વાર કૌરવોએ ભોજનમાં વિષ નાખી તેને નદીમાં ડુબાડ્યો, પરંતુ તે મર્યો નહીં અને પાતાળમાં અમૃતપાન કરવાથી ૧૦,૦૦૦ હાથીના બળવાળો થયો. તે બલરામ પાસે ગદાયુદ્ધ શીખેલો અને તેમાં નિપુણ બન્યો હતો. તે દ્રૌપદી ઉપરાંત હિડિમ્બા સાથે પરણ્યો હતો અને ઘટોત્કચ નામે પુત્ર હતો. ભીમે જરાસંધનો વધ કૃષ્ણની સલાહ અનુસાર કરેલો. મહાભારતના યુદ્ધમાં દુઃશાસનને મારી દ્રૌપદીના અપમાનનો બદલો લીધો અને છેલ્લે દુર્યોધનને કૃષ્ણની સલાહ અનુસાર જાંઘ પર ગદા મારી માર્યો હતો. યુદ્ધ બાદ અન્ય પાંડવોની સાથે રાજ્ય કરી વનમાં ગયો હતો અને રસ્તામાં દેહ પડતાં સ્વર્ગે સિધાવ્યો.

Bhimsen (also known simply as Bhim) was the second son of King Pāndu and Kunti. He was born to Kunti and Vāyudev through the power of the mantra given to Kunti by Durvāsā Rishi. He is also known as Vāyuputra. He was strong from birth and had a voracious appetite. Once, the Kauravas fed him poison and drowned him in a river. However, he did not die. He went to pātāl, where he drank amrut and gained the strength of 10,000 elephants. He learned to fight with the mace from Balrām and became an expert. He was married to Draupadi and Hidimbā. He had a son named Ghatotkach from Hidimbā. He killed Jarāsandh in a wrestling match as advised by Krishna. In the Mahābhārat war, he killed Duhshāsan and avenged the humiliation Duhshāsan caused Draupadi. He killed Duryodhan by striking him on his thighs with a mace, as advised by Krishna. After the war, he ruled with his brothers and retired to the forest. He died while traveling on the path.
