વામન
અવતારો
વામન એ વિષ્ણુના મુખ્ય દશ અવતારોમાંનો પાંચમો અવતાર છે. તે તત્ત્વતઃ ઈશ્વરચૈતન્ય છે. ઈશ્વરચૈતન્યમાં પરબ્રહ્મ પુરુષોત્તમનારાયણના અનુપ્રવેશથી આ અવતાર થાય છે.
પ્રહ્લાદજીના પૌત્ર બલિરાજાને યજ્ઞ વડે દિવ્યરથ, અક્ષયભાથું ને અભેદ્ય કવચ પ્રાપ્ત થયાં. આના પ્રતાપે તેણે દેવલોક પ્રાપ્ત કર્યું. દેવોની માતા અદિતિએ પોતાના પતિ કશ્યપને આ દુઃખનો ઉપાય બતાવવા કહ્યું. કશ્યપે ભગવાનની ઉપાસના કરવા કહ્યું અને અદિતિએ ૧૨ દિવસ પયોવ્રત કર્યું. તેથી ભગવાન તેમની કૂખે ભાદરવા સુદ ૧૨ના દિવસે વામનજી રૂપે પ્રગટ થયા અને નર્મદા કિનારે બલિના ૧૦૦મા યજ્ઞમાં આવ્યા. બલિ પાસે ત્રણ ડગલાં પૃથ્વી માગી. બલિએ સંકલ્પ કર્યો અને ભગવાન વામનમાંથી વિરાટ બન્યા. બે ડગલાંમાં બધું જ લઈ લીધું. ત્રીજું ડગલું બલિના માથા પર મૂક્યું ને તેને સુતલમાં મોકલી દીધો. તેની ભક્તિથી ભગવાન પ્રસન્ન થયા ને તેના દરવાજે દેવપોઢી એકાદશીથી (આષાઢ સુદિ એકાદશીથી) દેવઊઠી એકાદશી (કારતક સુદિ એકાદશી) સુધી દર વર્ષે પાતાળમાં જઈ દ્વારપાળ તરીકે રહે છે. આજે પણ ભાદરવા સુદિ બારસનો દિવસ વામન જયંતીરૂપે ઊજવાય છે.
ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણે વચનામૃત ગઢડા પ્રથમ ૬૧માં બલી રાજા અને વામનજીનું દ્રષ્ટાંત આપીને બલી રાજાની ભક્તિને વખાણી છે.

Vāman is considered the fifth avatār of the 10 foremost avatārs of Vishnu. In terms of the five eternal entities, Vāman is of the ishwar entity, which is capable of incarnation when Parabrahma Purushottam Narayan enters the ishwar.
King Bali, the grandson of Prahlādji, attained a divine chariot, akshay-bhāthu (a utensil which gives food that never runs out), and an armor that cannot be pierced by performing a yagna. With the power of these, he conquered Dev-lok. Aditi, the mother of the devas asked her husband Kashyap to rectify this. Kashyap told her to offer upāsanā to God. Aditi commenced payovrat (drinking only milk) for 12 days. As a result, God took birth through her womb as Vāman on Bhadarva sud 12. He came to King Bali’s 100th yagna on the banks of Narmada River and asked him for 3 steps worth of land. Bali granted his wish and Vāman grew vastly in size to cover everything in two steps. Vāman put his foot on Bali’s head for the third step and sent him to Sutal. However, Vāman was pleased with his devotion (of sacrificing everything of his), so he goes to Bali’s doorstep as his guard every year for four months (from Dev-Podhi Ekadashi to Dev-Uthi Ekadashi). Today, Vāman’s birth is celebrated on Bhadarva sud 12.
In Vachanamrut Gadhada I-61, Bhagwan Swaminarayan has praised King Bali’s bhakti after mentioning the sacrifice he made to grant Vāman Bhagwan his wish
