માર્કંડેય ઋષિ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
માર્કન્ડેય ઋષિ મૃકણ્ડ ઋષિના પુત્ર હતા. તેઓએ વેદોનો અભ્યાસ કરેલો. તેઓ આજીવન બ્રહ્મચારી હતા અને અપરિગ્રહીપણે રહેતા. કરોડો વર્ષો સુધી તપશ્ચર્યા કરીને મૃત્યુ પર વિજય મેળવ્યો. આથી ઇન્દ્રને ડર લાગતાં ઋષિને ડગાવવા માટે કામદેવ, ગન્ધર્વ, અપ્સરાઓ વગેરેને ઋષિ પાસે મોકલ્યાં. છતાં ઋષિ ડગ્યા નહીં અને ઋષિના તપના તેજથી સૌ બળવા માંડ્યાં અને ભાગી ગયાં. તેમના તપથી ભગવાન પ્રસન્ન થયા અને વરદાન માંગવા કહ્યું ત્યારે તેમણે ભગવાનની માયા જોવાની વિનંતી કરી. પછી ભગવાન અંતર્ધાન થયા અને ઋષિ ધ્યાનમાં બેઠા, તેમાં તેમણે ભગવાનની વિચિત્ર ને અચરજકારી માયા જોઈ. તેમાં જ એક નાનકડા શિશુના ઉદરમાં તેઓ ગયા ને સૃષ્ટિની ઉત્પત્તિ જોઈને પછી બહાર આવ્યા.

Mārkandeya Rishi was the son of Mrukand Rishi. He had studied the Vedas. He was a life-long celibate and lived without any possessions. He performed austerities for a million years and conquered death. Therefore, Indra became scared that he may have to relinquish his position. He sent Kamdev, gāndarvas (celestial being), and apsarās to detract him from his penance. However, they all started to burn from light of his penance and fled. God was pleased with his penance and granted him a boon. He asked to see God’s māyā. God disappeared. When he sat to meditate, he saw the strange and astonishing māyā of God. He entered the abdomen of an infant and saw the creation, then came out.
