ગોપીઓ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
શ્રીકૃષ્ણ જ્યારે બાળપણમાં વ્રજમાં હતા ત્યારે ત્યાં ગોપાલકોનો સમુદાય વિશેષ હતો. ગોપ કન્યાઓ પૂર્વે ઋષિમુનિઓ હતી. તેમણે પૂર્વજન્મમાં ભગવાન પાસે વર માગ્યો હતો કે અમને તમારે વિષે પ્રેમલક્ષણા ભક્તિ જાગે અને તેવી ભક્તિનો લાભ મળે. ભગવાને તેમનો વર સત્ય કર્યો અને તેમને વ્રજમાં ગોપકન્યાઓ તરીકે જન્મ આપ્યો. તેમનો ભાવ પૂરો કરવા શ્રીકૃષ્ણે તેમની સાથે રાસ રચાવ્યો અને પ્રેમલક્ષણા ભક્તિનો તેમનો ભાવ પૂર્ણ કર્યો. શ્રીકૃષ્ણ વાંસળીની તાન છેડતા ત્યારે ગોપીઓ કામકાજ છોડી, લોકલાજનો ત્યાગ કરી તેના સૂરોમાં ખેંચાઈ આવતી. શ્રીમદ્ભાગવતમાં દસમા સ્કંન્ધમાં તેમનો વિશેષ ઉલ્લેખ મળે છે.
ગોપીઓને શ્રીકૃષ્ણ ભગવાન પ્રત્યે ઉત્કૃષ્ટ ભક્તિ હતી. શ્રીજીમહારાજે વચનામૃત ગ્રંથમાં તેમની ભક્તિનાં ખૂબ વખાણ કર્યાં છે. ઉદ્ધવજી જેવા જ્ઞાની ભક્તે પણ ગોપીઓની ચરણરજના અધિકારી થવાનો વર માગ્યો હતો. (વચનામૃત કારિયાણી ૯; ગઢડા અંત્ય ૨૮)
શ્રીકૃષ્ણે વ્રજનો ત્યાગ કરી મથુરા જવા નીકળ્યા ત્યારે ગોપીઓ માર્ગમાં સૂઈ ગઈ (વચનામૃત કારિયાણી ૧૧) પણ શ્રીકૃષ્ણની રહેવાની મરજી ન જોઈ તેથી માર્ગ આપ્યો અને તેમના વિરહમાં સ્મૃતિ કરતાં કરતાં જીવન પસાર કર્યું. તેઓ ઘરડી થઈ ગઈ ત્યારે વર્ષો બાદ મહાભારતના યુદ્ધ બાદ શ્રીકૃષ્ણે તેમને કુરુક્ષેત્રમાં તેડાવી અને દર્શન આપ્યાં, છતાં તેમનો પ્રેમ અને દિવ્યભાવ અકબંધ રહ્યો. તેમનો ભગવાન પ્રત્યેનો પ્રેમ ફક્ત દૈહિક આકર્ષણનો નહોતો, પણ સમજણ (વચનામૃત સારંગપુર ૧૫) અને આજ્ઞાપાલન (વચનામૃત કારિયાણી ૧૧) તથા દિવ્યભાવનો હતો.

When Krishna was in Vraj during his childhood, the cowherds made up majority of the people. The cowherd maidens (Gopis) were rishis in their past birth. They had asked God to bless them so that they could develop prem-lakshanā bhakti (bhakti characterized by love toward God) to God and have a chance to show it. God fulfilled their wish and gave them the birth of cowherds in Vraj, and he accepted such bhakti by playing rās with them. Whenever Krishna played his flute, the Gopis would leave their work and criticism of their people to meet Krishna. Their story is mainly found in the 10th skandh of the Shrimad Bhagwat.
The Gopis had the highest level of bhakti toward Shri Krishna. Shriji Maharaj has highly praised their bhakti in the Vachanamrut many times. Even Uddhav, one of the wisest devotees, asked to be worthy of applying the dust of the Gopis’ feet on his head. (Vachanamrut Kariyani 9; Gadhada III-28)
When Krishna was leaving Vraj for Mathura, the Gopis decided to block his path and not let him leave. They lay across the path to block it. (Vachanamrut Kariyani 11). However, when they looked him in the eyes, they did not see his wish to stay and cleared the path for his chariot. They grew old longing for him, never to see Krishna again until he called them in Kurukshetra after the Mahabharat war. Despite they never saw Krishna till then, their love and perception of divinity remained intact. Their love toward Krishna was not just physical in nature but of understanding (Vachanamrut Sarangpur 15), obeying his commands (Vachanamrut Kariyani 11), and perception of divinity.
