શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
કાર્તિકેય મહાદેવના પુત્ર હતા. તે મહાબળવાન અને બ્રહ્મચારી હતા. તે શૂરવીર સેનાની હોવાથી લડાઈના દેવ ગણાય છે. તે મોર ઉપર સવારી કરે છે અને ગણપતિના નાના ભાઈ છે. પાર્વતીએ બન્નેને બોલાવીને કહ્યું, “જે પૃથ્વીની પ્રદક્ષિણા કરીને વહેલા આવે તે સિદ્ધિ અને બુદ્ધિ સાથે પરણે.” તેથી કાર્તિકેય મોર પર સવારી કરીને ફરવા ગયા. પણ ગણપતિએ પોતાનાં માતા-પિતાને પૃથ્વી ગણીને તેમની પ્રદક્ષિણા કરીને કહ્યું, “મને પરણાવો.” તેથી માતાએ તેમને પરણાવ્યા. કાર્તિકેય આવીને જુએ છે તો ગણપતિને પરણેલા દીઠા. તે ઉપરથી ન પરણવાનો નિયમ લઈને કુંવારા રહ્યા.
ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણે કાર્તિકેયનો ઉલ્લક વચનામૃત કારિયાણી ૩માં ‘સ્વામી કાર્તિક’ તરીકે કર્યો છે.

Kārtikeya was the son of Mahādev (Shiva). He was strong yet a celibate. He is considered the deity of war because he possesses a brave army. His vehicle is the peacock. He is the younger brother of Ganpati. Pārvati called them both and said, “Whoever circles the earth first will wed Siddhi and Buddhi.” Kārtikeya mounted his peacock to circle the earth. Ganpati performed a pradakshinā of his mother Pārvati, since a mother is the form of the earth. Therefore, Pārvati wed Ganpati to Siddhi and Buddhi. Kārtikeya decided to remain a celibate since he saw Ganpati had married.
Bhagwan Swaminarayan refers to Kārtikeya in Vachanamrut Kāriyāni 3 as Swāmi Kārtik.
