Rām Bhagwān

Avatars

Ram is the seventh of the ten major avatār of Vishnu. In terms of entities, Ram is considered an ishwar entity, which are capable of incarnation when Parabrahma Purushottam Narayan enters the ishwar.

The earth was being terrorized by the demonic Ravan, the grandson of Maharshi Pulatsya. To free the earth from his tyranny, Ram was born to King Dashrath and Queen Kaushalya on Chaitra sud 9 in Ayodhya. He acquired knowledge from the family guru Vasishtha at 16 years of age. He slayed the demon Tarka and broke Shankar’s bow in a contest, which won him Sitaji’s hand in marriage in Mithila. Consequently, he accepted 14 years of exile in the forest in order to fulfill Kaikeyi’s boon granted to her by King Dashrath. In the forest, Sitaji was abducted by Ravan. To bring her back, Ram crossed the ocean leading to Lanka by writing the name ‘Ram’ on rocks and building a bridge across the ocean. With the help of an army of monkeys, he fought Ravan and slayed him. His rule lasted approximately 11,000 years.

Shri Ram was an ideal man, an ideal husband, and an ideal king. He lived by the mantra: One word, one wife, meaning, if he gave his word, he would never fall back.

Ram Bhagwan’s life story is captured in the Ramayan, an epic scripture written by Valmik Rushi. Of the great saintly poets in Bharat, Tulsidas was among the devotees of Bhagwan Ram, and he has also written the Tulsi Ramayan.

Other names of Ram Bhagwan: Raghunathji, Ramchandraji, Maryada Purushottam, Dashrath Nandan, etc.
