બલિ રાજા
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
બલિ રાજા પ્રહ્લાદના પુત્ર વિરોચનના પુત્ર હતા. તે ખૂભ બળવાન હતા. તેમણે દેવો પર વિજય પ્રાપ્ત કરી ત્રિલોકીનું રાજ્ય મેળવ્યું હતું. તેમણે ઇન્દ્ર થવા માટે નર્મદાતીરે નવ્વાણું યજ્ઞ કર્યા અને સોમો યજ્ઞ આરંભ્યો ત્યારે દેવમાતા અદિતિની વિનંતીથી ભગવાન વામન અવતાર ધરી ત્યાં ગયા. તેમણે બલિ પાસે દાનની યાચના કરતાં ત્રણ ડગલાં પૃથ્વી માંગી. બલિ ગુરુ શુક્રાચાર્યની ના છતાં પૃથ્વી આપવા તૈયાર થયા. ત્યાં જ વામને વિરાટ રૂપ ધારણ કર્યું અને બે ડગલાંમાં બધું રાજ્ય લઈ લીધું. પછી બલિના કહેવાથી ત્રીજું ડગલું તેના મસ્તકે મૂક્યું. આથી, તે સુતળમાં જતો રહ્યો. ભગવાન તેની આ ભક્તિથી રાજી થઈ ગયા અને વર માંગવા કહ્યું. બલિએ ભગવાનને અખંડ પોતાના દરવાજે રહેવા વિનંતી કરી. આથી ભગવાન તેના દરવાજે અખંડ રહ્યા.

King Bali was the grandson of Prahlad and son of Virochan. He had conquered the devas and became the ruler of the three realms. He commenced on a yagna on the bank of Narmada river to assume Indra’s position. Aditi, the mother of the devas, prayed to Vishnu to protect her sons and stop Bali from taking Indra’s position. Vishnu assumed the Vāman avatār and went to King Bali while he was giving alms during his yagna. Vāman asked for land covered by three steps. Bali agreed to fulfill Vāman’s wish despite opposition from his guru Shukrāchārya. Vāman then assumed an immense form and covered the three realms in two steps, leaving one step. Bali told Vāman to step on his body as it was made of the earth. Vāman stepped on him and pushed him to Sutal (one of the seven pātāls). God was please with his bhakti, however and gave him a boon. Bali asked God to stay with him forever. Therefore, God stays at his doorstep.
