પરમહંસો
રામાનંદ સ્વામી ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણના દીક્ષાગુરુ હતા. તેઓનું પૂર્વાશ્રમનું નામ રામ શર્મા હતું. તેમનો જન્મ અયોધ્યામાં પિતા અજયદેવ અને માતા સુમતિદેવીને ત્યાં વિ. સં. ૧૭૯૫માં શ્રાવણ વદિ અષ્ટમીને દિવસે થયો હતો. નાનપણથી ભક્તિ તેમને ગમતી, તેથી ૧૨ વર્ષની ઉંમરે વધુ અભ્યાસના બહાને ઘર છોડી નીકળ્યા. કાશીરામ શાસ્ત્રી પાસે રહી શાસ્ત્રનો અભ્યાસ કર્યો. પછી લોજ આવી આશ્રમ સ્થાપ્યો. તેઓ અવાર-નવાર કહેતા કે હું તો ડુગડુગી વગાડનારો છું ને ખરા ખેલના ભજવનાર (નીલકંઠવર્ણી) તો હવે આવશે. જ્યારે મહારાજ નીલકંઠવર્ણી વેશે તેમને મળ્યા ત્યારે તેમને રામાનંદ સ્વામીને પોતાના ગુરુ તરીકે સ્વીકાર્યા. તેમણે વર્ણીને દીક્ષા આપીને ધર્મધુરા સોંપી. તથા પોતાના આશ્રિતોને શ્રીજીમહારાજની આજ્ઞામાં રહેવાનો આદેશ આપ્યો. વિક્રમ સંવત ૧૮૫૮ના માગશર સુદ તેરસના દિવસે તેઓ ફણેણી ગામમાં અંતર્ધાના થયા.

Ramanand Swami, Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s guru, gave Nilkanth Varni dikshā and named him Sahajanand Swami. His birth name was Rām Sharmā. He was born to Ajaydev and Sumatidevi in Ayodhya on Shrāvan vad 8 of V. S. 1795. He was inclined to devotion of God in his childhood. At the age of 12, using further study of the shāstras as an excuse, he renounced his home and studied scriptures from Kāshirām Shāstri. He then established an āshram in Loj. He often said, “I am merely a drum-beater. The real performer is yet to come.” (Implying that he gathered the crowd for the show. The real performer - Nilkanth Varni - is yet to come.) When Nilkanth Varni met him, he accepted Ramanand Swami as his guru. Ramanand Swami gave Nilkanth Varni dikshā, named him Sahajanand Swami and Narayana Muni, and handed the reigns of his sampradāy to him. He commanded his followers to abide by Sahajanand Swami’s commands. On Māgshar sud 13, V. S. 1858, he left his mortal body in Faneni.
