અંબરીષ રાજા
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
અંબરીષ રાજા સૂર્યવંશી રાજા નાભાગના પુત્ર હતા. તેઓ ભગવદ્ ભક્ત હતા અને સાથે પરાક્રમી પણ હતા. માત્ર સાત દિવસમાં જ ભૂમિ જીતી લઈ આધિપત્ય મેળવ્યું હતું. એક વાર તેમણે એક વરસનું દ્વાદશી વ્રત કર્યું અને વ્રતના અંતે કાર્તિક માસમાં ત્રણ દિવસના ઉપવાસ કર્યા. બારસે પારણાના સમયે દુર્વાસા અતિથિ તરીકે આવ્યા. રાજાએ પૂજન કર્યું અને સાથે જમવા રોક્યા, પણ ઋષિ આહ્નિક બાકી હોવાથી સ્નાન કરવા ગયા, પણ તેમને ખૂબ મોડું થતાં પારણાનું મુહૂર્ત સાચવવા ચરણામૃત પ્રાશન કરી પારણાં કર્યાં. જ્યારે દુર્વાસાએ આ જાણ્યું ત્યારે ક્રોધમાં પોતાની શિખામાંથી કૃત્યા ઉત્પન્ન કરી અંબરીષને મારવા મોકલી. ભક્તનું આવું અપમાન જોઈ ભગવાન વિષ્ણુએ અંબરિષની રક્ષામાં મૂકેલાં સુદર્શન ચક્રે કૃત્યાનો નાશ કર્યો. પછી તે દુર્વાસા પાછળ પડ્યું. દુર્વાસા ભાગ્યા અને બધે ફરી પાછા એક વર્ષ પછી અંબરીષ પાસે આવ્યા અને માફી માંગી ત્યારે ચક્ર પાછું વળ્યું. અંબરીષે ત્યાર પછી જ દુર્વાસા ઋષિ સાથે અન્ન ગ્રહણ ક્યું. શ્રીજીમહારાજે તેમને ‘આત્મનિવેદી’ કહ્યા છે.

King Ambarish was a king of the Surya dynasty. He was the son of King Nābhāg. He was a great devotee and heroic. He conquered the earth in merely seven days. Once, he observed a vrat for one year. At the end of the Kartik month, he fasted for three days. On the 12th day of the lunar calendar, Durvasa Rishi arrived as a guest. The king received him and invited him to a feast. However, the rishi went to bathe before eating. He took a long time and the auspicious time for the king to end his vrat neared. In order to complete his vrat, he partook charanamrut. When Durvasa found out, he became angry and conjured a demoness from his hair to kill Ambarish. Vishnu saw his devotee being insulted and sent the Sudharshan disc to kill the demoness. The disc then went after Durvasa. Durvasa fled from it for one year before he came back to Ambarish and asked for his forgiveness. The disc turned back only after Durvasa became humble. Ambarish ate only after Durvasa subdued his anger toward him. Shriji Maharaj refers to Ambarish as ‘ātma-nivedi’ - meaning all his activities are done only after placing God first.
