રાહુ
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
રાહુ પુરાણાનુસાર નવ ગ્રહોમાંનો એક છે. તે કશ્યપ ઋષિને સિંહિકાથી થયેલો પુત્ર હતો. ભગવાને દેવતાઓને અમૃત પાના કરાવ્યું ત્યારે રાહુએ ચોરીથી અમૃત પી લીધું હતું. સૂર્ય અને ચંદ્ર રાહુના આ કૃત્યની જાણકારી ભગવાન વિષ્ણુને આપી. ભગવાને સુદર્શન ચક્રથી તેનું માથું કાપી નાખ્યું, પરંતુ રાહુએ અમૃત પી લીધું હતું તેથી તે અમર થઈ ગયો. તેનું મસ્તક રાહુ અને ધડ કેતુ થયું. ત્યારથી રાહુ સૂર્ય અને ચંદ્ર સાથે વેર રાખે છે અને તેમને સમયે સમયે ગ્રસે છે. તેને ગ્રહણ કહેવાય છે.

According to the Purāns, Rāhu is one of the nine grahas (planetary bodies). He is the son of Kashyap Rishi and Sinhikā. When God was giving the devtās amrut to drink, Rāhu secretly assumed the form of a devtās and drank the amrut. Surya and Chandra noticed his cunning and informed Vishnu. Vishnu used the Sudarshan Chaktra to cut his head off. However, the amrut reached his neck, so that part of him became immortal. His head remained as Rāhu and his body became that of Ketu. From henceforth, Rāhu has an enmity toward Surya and Chandra. Therefore, he comes in between them from time to time. This is known as the eclipses.
