Gadhadā III-19

  1. Two undesirable traits of a renunciant: lust and affection for his relatives.
  2. One should not keep affection for one’s relatives and for those who serve him, because:
  1. This type of person repulses Mahārāj.
  2. It is a sin graver than the five grave sins.
  3. His life becomes futile.
  4. One begins to have thoughts of māyā and becomes bound by māyā.
  1. The means to eradicating these two undesirable traits:
  1. Understand: “I am the ātmā, distinct from this physical body; and I have no relationship with anyone.”
  2. Shun all those who obstruct one’s worship of God, knowing them to be avidyā [i.e. māyā].
  3. This talk should be said and heard daily; and if not done a particular day, then one should observe a fast.
