Gadhada II-22: Two Armies; The Installation of Nar-Nārāyan

History

Shriji Mahārāj talks about His account in Amdāvād: “When I went to Amdāvād to perform the installation ceremony of Shri Nar-Nārāyan Dev, thousands of people had gathered for the festival. Following the completion of the installation of Shri Nar-Nārāyan Dev, and after thousands of Brāhmins from Amdāvād had been fed, I departed from there and spent the night in Jetalpur. There, I began to think, ‘I want to forget all memories of all of those people and all of the activities that I saw.’ In doing this, My heart felt intense grief, and as a result, I became ill… While thinking, I forgot all of the activities, and dispelled all those thoughts in such a manner that it was as if I had not even stayed at Lake Kānkariā, and as if there had been no festival - no thoughts remained at all…”

There is a hidden history behind Shriji Mahārāj’s illness that He describes in this Vachanāmrut:

In this Vachanāmrut, Mahārāj says He became ill because He had to engage in the activity (pravrutti) of feeding Brāhmins during the pratishthā of Narnārāyan in Amdāvād. This itself is merely showing human traits (manushya-bhāv), since one who creates, sustains, and destroys countless brahmānds and is not disturbed cannot be swayed by such a small activity.

After installing Nar-Nārāyan Dev in Amdāvād, Nar-Nārāyan Dev became predominant in everyone’s mind and Mahārāj became secondary. Therefore, Mahārāj was dismayed that without understanding Mahārāj to be sarvopari and cause of all, all of the mumukshus will not attain ultimate liberation (ātyantik kalyān). It seemed people grabbed the branch of a tree (Nar-Nārāyan Dev) instead of its trunk (Mahārāj Himself).

Shriji Mahārāj’s intention was to curb bhaktas from the fault of practicing upāsanā of trivial deities. Yet, these bhaktas became bound to the upāsanā of deities as according to their natural tendency; which caused Mahārāj to become disheartened. Mahārāj’s illness stemmed from this thought.

[Bhagwān Swāminārāyan – Part 4/332-333]

Moreover, after installing Nar-Nārāyan Dev, Shriji Mahārāj said to the senior sādhus, “Narnārāyan is the king of Bharat-Khand. I have installed him for the sake of countless other jivas. However, you all should not be misled. In Badrikāshram, Nar-Nārāyan Dev meditates upon Me.” At this time, a haribhakta brought a murti of Narvir to consecrate it with Mahārāj touch and placed it in His hands. Mahārāj got up and, drawing attention to Himself, said, “Everyone in Badrikāshram meditates upon this murti.”

[Nirgundās Swāmini Vāto: Page 79]

Even after clearly alluding to His own sarvopari upāsanā, Nar-Nārāyan Dev became predominant to everyone and they forgot about the eternal upāsanā of Shriji Mahārāj.

Additionally, after the pratishthā, Shriji Mahārāj held Ānandānand Swāmi’s hand and arrived in the courtyard of the Mandir where everyone resounded the victory toll of Nar-Nārāyan Dev. Near the gateway where Mahārāj often discoursed (currently there is a shrine on this spot), He asked Ānandānand Swāmi, “Swāmi, did you understand anything?” Ānandānand Swāmi simply looked at Mahārāj as if he understood nothing.

Mahārāj said, “Infinite Nar-Nārāyan Dev, Krishna-Nārāyan, Lakshmi-Nārāyan, and Vāsudev-Nārāyan offer upāsanā to this manifest Swāminārāyan. Everyone forgot My greatness because naturally everyone develops faith in the non-manifest form of God. But Nar-Nārāyan Dev is the deity of Bharat-Khand. Due to Durvāsā’s curse, he meditated upon Me. Therefore, I told him I will manifest on the earth to establish Bhāgwat-dharma. I have narrated this clandestine message several times; yet people still leave the cause (Shriji Mahārāj) and embrace the effect (deities and other avatārs).”

[Bhagwān Swāminārāyan – Part 4/324]

In conclusion, Mahārāj’s illness resulted from people not becoming attached to Mahārāj’s swarup.
