Kariyani-7: Vairāgya Due to Obsession; Ultimate Liberation

Nirupan

January 31, 1974. Pramukh Swami Maharaj explained Vachanamrut Kariyani 7:

Gruhasthas are on the path of pravrutti (active in social affairs). They experience marriages (happiness) and regrets (unhappiness) - there are countless such adversities. There is no end to adversities. Even so, everyone still yearns to take pleasure in that. It is like eating laddus made of wood. One who eats them will regret it. One who does not will also regret thinking, ‘Hmm... I wonder what they taste like?’ But one only finds out when they eat them. Laddus made after cremating someone do not contain cardamom (they are simple in taste). Similarly, there is no happiness in sansār. When one completes one task, another crops up. A shepherd tried to sit 100 sheep down, but his time went to waste as he did not have time to sit down and rest. Therefore, Maharaj is talking about letting go (of social affairs). Just has our mother and father from our previous life are not ours, the ones from this life are not ours either. We have to let go of these as well. If one understands this, one’s troubles will not remain. Parvatbhai had this understanding. Even though his son died, he left for Gadhada (because of Maharaj’s āgnā). He said, ‘I’ll bathe on the way.’ If one believes their bodily relations to be theirs, one will be miserable. If one loses their own five dollars, one will be miserable; but if someone else loses millions or billions, one is not disturbed. If one believes (the money) is not ours, then there is no misery. When the feeling of ‘my-ness’ is abandoned, there will be no misery. If one has firm faith in God and the association of a Sadhu, then ‘my-ness’ will be destroyed. They themselves do not have ‘my-ness’ so they can help us break ours. By repeatedly saying it is all false, it will become false. When ‘my-ness’ is removed, the jiva becomes happy.”

June 21, 1986. Surat. In the afternoon, at Purushottambhai’s house in Navchetan Society, Pramukh Swami Maharaj explained Vachanamrut Kariyani 7:

“To eat, drink, look, etc. while remaining within the commands of God is nivrutti (absence of activity). You may engage in activities of the whole world, but maintain sādhutā. We need to rid the attachment to one’s body. If someone tells us off, we may feel: when can I get even with him. But are we the body? One should not waste time in caring for the body. One should treat the body like shoes. If someone scolds us, we should tolerate it. The one who scolds us will regret later on. We are here to accomplish our goal. Therefore, do not become obstinate in any way. If someone else is wasting their time, we should not do the same. Rid oneself of vicious habits. That is what hinders us. Otherwise, Bhagwan will destroy our other internal instincts.

“The thread of devotion should not break. One should sing the cheshtha every day. When the arti bell rings, one should attend at once. One should read, but not waste time sitting idly. Mahatam Swami was not learned, yet he read the Vachanamrut and the Bhaktachintamani at every chance. Because of this niyam, he succeeded.

“In this Vachanamrut, Maharaj talks about the manifest form of God. One should have firm faith in the form of God on earth in human form. His actions are like ours - talking, walking, stomach hurts, gets scared - all of this is similar to us. One may have doubts about this. But whoever comes into his contact becomes nirgun. Even though he appears (like a human), he is not. If he commands us, we should not have second thoughts. Even if he commands us to put our hand in a lion’s den, one should not doubt.

“We have to remain together with everyone, yet remain different. Even while remaining among others, their nature should not touch us. It is good to remain together, but one should not lose their faith hearing others’ doubts.”

[Brahmaswarup Pramukh Swami Maharaj: Part 4/493]
