Gadhada I-67: Acquiring the Virtues of the Satpurush

Nirupan

June 3, 1965, Adās. During the morning discourse at Chunibhāi’s home, Yogiji Mahārāj explained Vachanamrut Gadhadā I-67, “We acquire whichever virtues we perceive in the Satpurush. When we sit for a photo and shut our eyes, what will be the outcome? How we look in the photo depends on our posture. Similarly, we become whatever we understand the Satpurush to be. One should eradicate the barrier between him and us by understanding him to be the all-knower and flawless. Do as he says, as this is how the virtues he possesses can be acquired. Nirgun Swāmi would read this Vachanamrut a lot. He would not let anyone get up while he was reading it.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 4/75]

July 1969, Gondal. During the discourse, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “The Satpurush always wishes for our betterment. He breaks the attachment we have towards this world as the affairs of this world are binding. As the jiva becomes entangled in worldly objects, it forgets the true purpose of why it has come on this earth. The Sant awakens them from this slumber.

“There were two satsangi brothers in a village. One was staunch and the other had a mundane understanding. When the younger brother [an ordinary satsangi] passed away, he became a ghost. The older brother [a staunch satsangi] would sit in the mandir daily and spend his time engrossed in Satsang. When the older brother was about to pass away, Mahārāj came in a vimān (a celestial vehicle) to take him to Akshardhām. The younger brother [as a ghost] came and stood there. The older brother was attached to his younger brother and looked at him from the vimān. Mahārāj discerned that the older brother still has affection for his younger brother and removed him from the vimān. They both became ghosts.

“Their family members were able to see them. They said, ‘You said you would go to Mahārāj’s abode, so why are you now a ghost?’ He said, ‘I was attached to my younger brother so Mahārāj removed me from the vimān and I became a ghost. Do not worry, I will not harass anyone; however, when you next serve a sādhu food, please place two lādus in this plate so we can partake of the prasād.’

“One day, Bālmukund Swāmi of Junāgadh came to visit their house. He saw them and said, ‘Why are you two here? Go to Badrikāshram.’ He sprinkled sanctified water on them and he sent them both to Badrikāshram.

“In this way, even if a little attachment remains, Mahārāj will not take one to his abode. So make sure no attachments remain.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 5/386]

September 10, 1967, Mumbai. During the morning discourse, Yogiji Mahārāj explained Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-76, “Mahārāj had such great divyabhāv! Therefore, he said, ‘Muktānand Swāmi’s answer is correct.’

“If one believes, ‘I know everything and I do everything,’ then he will stop acquiring virtues. Only if he repents within will virtues sprout.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 4/526]

After narrating Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-67 from memory, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “To acquire the virtues of the Motā-Purush, one should behave as a humble servant and become repentent of one’s own flaws and maintain focus on his countless virtues. However, one will never attain the virtues of the Motā-Purush through one’s own perceived knowledge and pretense of being overwise.”

[Yogi Vāni: 9/50]

After reading Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-67, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “How can a spiritual aspirant acquire the virtues of the Motā-Purush? Muktānand Swāmi answered the question but the word ‘repentence’ (paritāp) was not mentioned. ‘Repentence’ is a great tool on the spiritual path. If one understands oneself to be extremely insignificant before God and his Bhakta and sings the virtues of God and the Motā-Purush, one will acquire all their virtues. Considering oneself to be insignificant, maintaining a sense of servitude, and understanding the glory of the Motā-Purush - if one possesses these, one will certainly acquire the virtues of the Motā-Purush.”

[Yogi Vāni: 24/46]

March 23, 1959, Vāsanā. Yogiji Mahārāj said, “Everyone wishes to acquire the virtues of the Satpurush, but they do not feel remorseful of their vices. One should feel remorse and recognize one’s own flaws. One says of the Satpurush - who is the source of vivek (wisdom, discretion) - that he has no vivek. However, one should keep gunātit-bhāv in whatever the Satpurush does. In this way if one keeps total divinity in the Sant in every way, then one will acquire his virtues.”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 2/522]

March 26, 1956, Sārangpur. Yogiji Mahārāj said, “When can one be said to have developed a rapport with the Motā-Purush? When one acts according to Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-62. For these virtues to be acquired, one must perfect Vachanāmrut Gadhadā I-67. One should feel repentance [due to one’s own flaws] and think, ‘I do not understand anything.’ He does not comes to the Motā-Purush with preconceived notions. Then one will acquire the virtues of the Satpurush. We do not feel such repentance, hence:

Am be buti, tam be buti, buti bhelambhelā,
Chhāyā vinānu jhād batāvo, to tum guru hum chelā!

[Meaning: I am very clever and you are very clever, we are both clever alike; show me a tree that does not give shade, then you are a guru and I am your shishya.]

“Do not act over-wise in front of the Motā-Purush. Those that have tried to do so in front of Mahārāj and Shāstriji Mahārāj were left behind [on the spiritual path]. Acting over-wise means not setting aside the whims of one’s mind. If one thinks, ‘I will only accept that you are great if you show me a tree without shade,’ then how will one acquire the virtues of the Satpurush?”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 2/42]

October 1960, Bhādrā. Yogiji Mahārāj said, “Remorse (anutāp) is like tying together two pieces of cloths. Such a person would still be affected by adverse circumstances. Repentance (paritāp) is like smoothly joining two ends. One cannot find any sign of where they are joined. He will not suffer from adverse circumstances and will acquire virtues [of the Satpurush].”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 3/125]
