Gadhada III-19: Two Undesirable Traits of a Renunciant
Summary
- Two undesirable traits of a renunciant: lust and affection for his relatives.
- One should not keep affection for one’s relatives and for those who serve him, because:
- This type of person repulses Mahārāj.
- It is a sin graver than the five grave sins.
- His life becomes futile.
- One begins to have thoughts of māyā and becomes bound by māyā.
- The means to eradicating these two undesirable traits:
- Understand: “I am the ātmā, distinct from this physical body; and I have no relationship with anyone.”
- Shun all those who obstruct one’s worship of God, knowing them to be avidyā [i.e. māyā].
- This talk should be said and heard daily; and if not done a particular day, then one should observe a fast.
