Gadhada I-40: Savikalp and Nirvikalp Samadhi

Summary

  1. One who has attained savikalp samādhi still entertains pure desires.
  2. One who has attained nirvikalp samādhi remains engrossed in the form of God, having attained the attributes of Aksharbrahma.
  3. Difference between bhakti and upāsanā:
  1. Bhakti means worshipping God in the nine ways [mentioned in the Shrimad Bhagwat: (1) shravan, (2) kirtan, (3) smaran, (4) pāda-sevan, (5) archan, (6) vandan, (7) dāsya, (8) sakhya, (9) ātmanivedan].
  2. Upāsanā means having a firm conviction that God eternally possesses a form.
  1. Characteristics of one with upāsanā:
  1. Even if he becomes brahmarup, conviction that God possesses a form never disappears.
  2. Even if he happens to listen to scriptures propounding the view that God is formless, he would still understand God to always have a form.
