Gadhada I-45: Does God Possess a Form or Is He Formless?

Summary

  1. God forever possesses a form:
  1. The Shrutis mention: “That God looked towards māyā.” One who sees has eyes; along with other parts [hands, feet, etc.]. Therefore, God can be said to possess a [complete] form.
  2. The Shrutis mention that God is without hands, feet, etc.; but that should be understood as māyik hands, feet, etc. In reality, God’s form is divine, not māyik.
  1. God’s divine light is formless, but it is antaryāmi, governor of all, and grants the fruits of karmas to all jivas and ishwars; hence, it should be considered to possess a form.
