Gadhada III-28: Falling from the Path of God

Many days passed after Krishna came to Mathura and killed Kansa. One day, Krishna called Uddhav and said, “Go to Vraj. The Gopis must miss me since I have performed many divine actions in Vraj with them. Give them my message and true knowledge. Relieve them of the pain of separation.”

Uddhavji came to Gokul on a chariot and met the Gopis. The Gopis recalled Krishna’s divine actions and asked questions about Krishna. Uddhavji conveyed Krishna’s message. He stayed there for many months to rid their longing of Krishna. At each and every place in Vraj, Uddhavji asked them what action Krishna perform there. The Gopis told him how Krishna performed divine actions on the Yumana River bank and Vrundavan, and how Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan with his finger. They would become immersed in Krishna as they relived his divine feats.

Witnessing the acts of love of Gopis toward Krishna and their complete oneness with Krishna, Uddhavji also became complete with love. He voiced that there is nothing better than being born as the Gopis because they have lovingly become transfixed in Krishna’s divinity, who is the ātmā of the world. Therefore, Uddhavji asked to be born as the flowers, vines, or grass of Vrundavan, on which the dust of the Gopis’ feet fall as they walk.

Regarding this incident, Shriji Maharaj says in the Shri Haricharitramrut Sagar: “Uddhavji was very wise. Yet, he considered the Gopis to be greater than himself. He wished for the dust of their feet. The sadhus and devotees should cater feelings similar to Uddhavji. If the sadhus and devotees do not consider each other as great, then that is similar to an elephant bathing in the Ganga River and then throwing dirt on itself.”

ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણ મથુરામાં આવીને કંસ વગેરે દુષ્ટોનો નાશ કરી દીધો એ વાતને ઘણો સમય વીતી ગયો. એક દિવસ કૃષ્ણ ઉદ્ધવને પાસે બોલાવી વાત કરી, “તમે ત્યાં વ્રજમાં જાઓ. ગોપીઓ સાથે મેં અનેક લીલાઓ કરી હોવાને કારણે અત્યારે એમને મારો વિરહ લાગ્યો હશે. તમે એમને મારો સંદેશો આપી, જ્ઞાન આપી, મનોવ્યથા દૂર કરો.” ઉદ્ધવજી કૃષ્ણની આજ્ઞાથી રથમાં સવાર થઈ ગોકુલમાં આવ્યા. ગોપીઓને મળ્યા ત્યારે ગોપીઓ કૃષ્ણની લીલા સંભારી સંભારીને કૃષ્ણ કેવા છે? એ વિષયક પ્રશ્નો પૂછવા લાગી. ઉદ્ધવજીએ કૃષ્ણ ભગવાનનો સંદેશો કહ્યો. ઉદ્ધવજી ગોપીઓની વિરહ-વ્યથા દૂર કરવા માટે કેટલાય મહિનાઓ સુધી વ્રજમાં રહ્યા. વ્રજમાં તે જે જે જગ્યાએ જતા તે તે સ્થળે ઉદ્ધવજી પૂછતા, “અહીં કૃષ્ણે કઈ લીલા કરી છે? અહીંયાં કૃષ્ણે શું કર્યું હતું?” અને એમને જવાબ આપવામાં વ્રજવાસીઓ કૃષ્ણ ભગવાનની યમુના કિનારાની, વૃંદાવનની, ગોવર્ધન પર્વતની વગેરે લીલાઓ યાદ કરીને તેમનામાં તન્મય થઈ જતાં. ઉદ્ધવજી વ્રજમાં રહીને ગોપીઓની આવી પ્રેમવ્યાકુળતા, અનેક પ્રકારની પ્રેમચેષ્ટાઓ અને શ્રીકૃષ્ણમાં તન્મયતા જોઈને પ્રેમાનંદથી પૂર્ણ થઈ ગયા. તેમણે કહ્યું કે ખરેખર, આ પૃથ્વી પર માત્ર આ ગોપીઓનું જ શરીર ધારણ કરવું શ્રેષ્ઠ અને સફળ છે. કારણ કે સર્વાત્મા શ્રીકૃષ્ણના પરમ પ્રેમમય દિવ્યભાવમાં તેઓ સ્થિત થઈ ગઈ છે. અને એટલે જ ઉદ્ધવજીએ વૃંદાવનમાં જ્યાં ગોપીઓની નિત્ય ચરણરજ મળતી રહે છે એવાં લતા, તૃણ અથવા વેલીનો અવતાર માંગી લીધો.

આના અનુસંધાનમાં શ્રીજીમહારાજ શ્રીહરિચરિત્રામૃતસાગરમાં કહે છે, “ઉદ્ધવજી ઘણા જ્ઞાની હતા તોપણ ગોપીઓને પોતાથી અધિક માની. ગોપીઓનાં ચરણની રજ ઇચ્છ્યા. સંત-હરિભક્તોએ પરસ્પર ઉદ્ધવજી જેવો ભાવ રાખવો. સંત અને હરિભક્ત એકબીજાનો ભાર ન રાખે તો હાથી ગંગામાં નાહીને શરીર ઉપર ધૂળ નાખે તેના જેવું છે.”
