Shri Krishna went with Arjun to fulfill his pledge

Once, Arjun went to visit Krishna at Dwarka. As they were talking, they heard a loud cry from a brāhmin whose newborn child had died. They asked the brāhmin what was troubling him. The brāhmin grieved, “I have appealed to the king eight times to save my dead sons and eight times he has ignored me. I have lost my ninth son. Each time my child is born, it dies immediately after birth. The king should protect his subjects; however, our king has become callous. Please bring my son back to life.”

Arjun sympathized with the brāhmin. However, Krishna remained silent, making Arjun wonder why he was not speaking. The brāhmin continued lamenting. Arjun could not bear his misery any longer and replied, “Do not grieve. I will protect your next son. If I fail, I will burn myself on a pyre for making a false promise.”

The brāhmin skeptically said, “When Balram, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha were not able to protect my sons, how will you?”

Arjun’s vanity was stung. He said, “I may not be Balram or Krishna, but I am Arjun, the Pandav. With my Gandiva bow, I will save your son from even Yama, the god of death. Go and let me know when your wife is ready to give birth.”

A few months later, the brāhmin rushed to call Arjun. Arjun snatched his Gandiv and went to the brāhmin’s hut. Arjun covered the hut with a stack of arrows and stood outside. Suddenly, they heard the cry of a baby. The brāhmin thought his tenth son had survived hearing the cry and went inside the hut. There, he found his wife crying. He asked what happened. His wife replied, “A little after our child was born, he just vanished!”

The brāhmin rushed outside crying, “Where is my son? Before, I was able to hold my dead children. This time, the child just vanished! You had promised to save my child.”

Arjun consoled the brāhmin and told him he will go search for his child. He searched in Yama’s realm, Indra’s realm, Agni’s realm, etc. but nowhere could he find the missing child. Therefore, to keep his promise, he got ready to burn himself on the pyre. However, Krishna arrived and said to Arjun, “Do not punish yourself. I will show you where the brāhmin’s son is.”

Together, they rode in their chariot, crossed the darkness of māyā with the light from Krishna’s Sudarshan Chakra, and arrived in the abode of Bhumā-Purush. Here, they found the brāhmin’s 10 children safe. Bhumā-Purush said to Arjun, “I had brought the brāhmin’s sons here so you can come here. You and Krishna are a part of me that have incarnated on the earth. Your work on the earth has nearly finished so return to me quickly.” Arjun now realized that Krishna knew this and remained silent from the beginning. He also realized his vanity was misplaced as faith in God ultimately wins battles, not one’s own strength. They brought the brāhmin’s sons back the same way they had arrived there.
