Vartal-19: Becoming a Devotee of God; Indiscretion

Prasang

In 1872 (VS 1928) Bhagatji was residing in Vartāl. At that time, Shri Govardhanbhāi was the chief kothāri of Vartāl. His nephew, Shri Girdharbhāi, came into Bhagatji’s contact. From the beginning, Girdharbhāi was a genuine spiritual aspirant and had many saintly qualities. He had decided that if he found an accomplished and great sadguru, he would renounce the world, become a sadhu, and stay with that sadguru in order to attain Bhagwān-realization in this very birth. Earlier, he had associated with Shukānand Swāmi’s disciple, Dharmaprasād Swāmi. The latter had associated with Gunātitānand Swāmi and, on the basis of Vachanāmrut Vartāl-19 would repeatedly tell Girdharbhāi, “Moksha is attained only through the company of Bhagwān or a Sant who has met Bhagwān.” When Girdharbhāi heard these words, he decided to find such a Satpurush to associate with. Therefore, he left Vartāl in order to travel around in Satsang to fulfil his quest.

At first, he stayed with Mana Bhagat in Gadhada for three months. Next, he stayed in Kotadā for two-and-a-half months before going to Junagadh. He also stayed with Nirgundās Swāmi in Ahmedabad for two months. Yet his mind would not accept them as, “Great,” as described by Mahārāj in the Vachanāmrut.

After that, he stayed with Achyutdās Swāmi in Bhuj for two-and-a-half months. Achyutdās Swāmi could continually see his ātmā. Although he had attained such a state, Girdharbhāi still did not feel the peace he desired. Finally, he returned to Vartāl, exhausted and unfulfilled.

In Vartāl, Girdharbhāi stood on one leg in front of the murti of Shri Harikrishna Mahārāj in Vartāl. After some time, pleased with his devotion, Bhagwān Swāminārāyan granted him his divine darshan. Girdharbhāi was overjoyed and thrilled to have this divine darshan. He prayed emotionally to Mahārāj, “Mahārāj, please make my state such that I can continually experience the bliss of your form. Also, please remain in my heart forever.”

Mahārāj was pleased with his prayer and said, “Bhaktarāj! A person can attain this state if he serves the param ekāntik Satpurush. Only he can purify the jiva and remove it from the cycle of infinite births by destroying māyā and establish my form in the heart. At present, such a Satpurush is Prāgji Bhakta, so serve him!”

Having said this, Bhagwān Swāminārāyan disappeared. Girdharbhāi was stunned because, rather than a sadguru, Mahārāj pointed him towards the meek devotee Prāgji Bhakta - the one who spent the day sewing in the assembly hall. Prāgji Bhakta, a tailor! How could he possibly be the Satpurush? Girdharbhāi was confused and his mind was overshadowed by doubts. He lacked clarity and failed to trust Mahārāj’s words. He again offered the same devotion to Mahārāj. After one month, Mahārāj, pleased by his genuine devotion, gave him divine darshan again.

Girdharbhāi repeated the same prayer to Mahārāj, “Mahārāj, please bless me with your continual darshan. Bless me so that I can achieve Bhagwān-realization and can recognize the one who is ekāntik.” Mahārāj laughed and said, “Bhaktarāj! At present, Prāgji Bhakta is the ekāntik Satpurush. Despite being under the guise of a tailor, he is the Satpurush who beholds my form continuously. He has already perfected ekāntik dharma. Put aside the pride of your caste. You will experience peace if you surrender to him.” Mahārāj said this and then disappeared. This reassurance was now enough for Girdharbhāi.

This marked the beginning of Girdharbhāi’s conviction in Bhagatji and the start of his spiritual association with him. Kothāri Govardhanbhāi also developed deep respect for Bhagatji. He now knew that Girdharbhāi would no longer wish to remain as a householder. He arranged for Girdharbhāi to be initiated into the sadhu-fold at the hands of Adbhutānand Swāmi and named him Vignāndās Swāmi.
