November 13, 1970. Rajkot. During the pārāyan, Yogiji Mahārāj explained Gadhadā III-8, “Today, the pārāyan is being read. Gitā and Bhagwat are remembered but this Vachanāmrut is not remembered. The words in the Vachanāmrut are Ved-vākya (equivalent to the words of the Vedas). One who is inspired by Shriji Mahārāj would have all 262 Vachanāmruts memorized. Currently, a pārāyan on the Vachanāmrut is taking place. So one should learn the virtues mentioned therein. If one does not read nor contemplate on it, then one will not understand the essence. Mahārāj’s speech and Mul Aksharmurti Gunātitānand Swāmi’s speech is supreme. A pārāyan on their words is the best. It is not ideal if one loses money in worldly affairs. But money spent in God’s service is the best. Shāstriji Mahārāj had this Vachanāmrut - Remaining Eternally Happy - read [many times]. Listen to it, remember it and put it into practice. Shriji Mahārāj had eagerness for discourses, so he had cushions and pillows placed and started talking. Fragrant flowers dangled from his ears. He looked very attractive.

“Eternally happy means happy one day and miserable the next, right? No. One who is happy throughout one’s life is one who is eternally happy. One who has a conviction in Bhagwan Swāminārāyan is a devotee. We all practice satsang for happiness. How can we remain eternally happy? That is the question. That day, Muktānand Swāmi, Nityānand Swāmi, and other great sadhus were seated there. Not minor sadhus. They were all learned scholars, but they could not supply an exact answer. So Shriji Mahārāj answered, first a devotee of God has firm vairāgya. What is firm vairāgya? Complete detachment from the creation of Prakruti-Purush is firm vairāgya. One does not have ties to anyone or anywhere except Mahārāj and Swāmi. One should maintain a vow of fidelity toward Mahārāj. Serve everyone else understanding that they belong to him. One can become detached to the world, but maintaining fidelity toward Mahārāj is more difficult. If one has 18 ties elsewhere, that is not fidelity. One person chanted five mālās for Jamiyā Dātār, five for Meladi, five for Ganpati, five for Mahādev. Sadhus insisted he chant the name of Swāminārāyan, so he said, ‘You are persistent so I’ll chant five for Swāminārāyan.’ Who will come to take him (to their abode) after death? He did not have one master. If one has firm faith, Mahārāj will come to take you to Akshardhām. Shriji Mahārāj is supreme and the cause of all avatārs - firm faith should be like that. And keep firm vairāgya.

“Learn the virtues of a sadhu. Otherwise, if one is insulted with a couple of words, one would say ‘Jay Swāminārāyan’ and leave on the first train. Then, even if they are beaten in sansār, he would not be able to leave sansār.

“Moreover, Mahārāj says one needs extremely firm swadharma (to remain eternally happy). Would it not have been sufficient if he said plain swadharma. No. He said extremely firm swadharma. Believing Shriji Mahārāj to be Purushottam, one observes the five religion vows and abides by his big and small commands. We cannot drink unfiltered water. We cannot watch films. We cannot eat from the bazaar. We cannot do anything where we would be accused: ‘You are Swāminārāyan yet why did you go to a restaurant?’ But what people do today is they leave the sadhus and go to a circus - is that extremely firm swadharma? We (sadhus) have to follow the Shikshāpatri, Dharmāmrut, and Nishkām-Shuddhi - that is our swadharma. To summarize, Mahārāj mentioned two things: firm vairāgya and swadharma. With these two means, one who has conquered all of their indriyas and kept them under their control, then he would never think of acting immorally.

“Second means Mahārāj says is intense love for God and God’s Bhakta. Not superficial love, but love such that one cannot live without them. One should follow their command even at the cost of losing one’s head - that is love. One should have affection coupled with knowledge of their greatness, such that one would not perceive human traits in them. One should read half the Vachanāmrut but keep it in their heart. Do not read the whole Vachanāmrut hastily. Fill it in your heart.”

Then, speaking to one devotee, Yogiji Mahārāj said, “You spread satsang to many but if you do this much, Mahārāj will take you to Akshardhām at the time of your death. Sāndha tetalā vāndhā. (As many ties there are, that many problems.) Only Shāstriji Mahārāj is our guru. Other than him, believe all of the other sadgurus are crowns on our head (i.e. respect them). But Shāstriji Mahārāj is our guru and Shriji Mahārāj is the supreme God, the cause of all avatārs, and Mul Aksharmurti Gunātitānand Swāmi is the abode of Shriji Mahārāj - this should be firm. We listen to an abundance of words of knowledge, but this is the true knowledge. One who has firm love would never say, ‘Swāmi, I cannot do this,’ when encountering some burden. As according to Loyā 3, one who understands the greatness would give his head.

“The third means Mahārāj says is close friendship with God and God’s Bhakta.” Swāmi then told a story of the friendship between a prince and the minister’s son. Then, he said, “If someone climbed on our neck, we would say, ‘Jay Swāminārāyan.’ We would end the friendship. We have many friends in this world, but we should become friends with God and the Sant.

“The fourth means is one never becomes indifferent toward God and his Bhakta. What we see here is if one encounters some hardship, he would think, ‘Swāmi burdened us and we are tired.’ He heads straight home with that thought. Dādā Khāchar kept Mahārāj in his home for 30 years. If Mahārāj left Gadhadā at the insistence of other devotees, Dādā Khāchar would cry. We should not become apathetic toward God and the Sant if we encounter some hardships. ‘Sadhus keep asking for things’ - with that thought, people run away. Jhinābhāi, Dādā Khāchar, and others never became indifferent to Mahārāj despite hardships. If we truly recognized the Satpurush, then we would not become indifferent to him. If our wife or children beat us with shoes, do we become indifferent to them?

“The fifth means is becoming joyful when gaining the company of God and his Bhakta. And the sixth means is not liking the company of non-believers. One likes the talks of those that abide by dharma and have faith. Who is a non-believer? That is revealed in Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-60: One who says all sadhus are equal and one who - in order to preserve his respect and not be condemned by others - listens to harsh words spoken against God and his Bhakta; both are considered non-believers. Moreover, one who believes God is formless is also a non-believer. God forever possesses a divine form. Here and in his abode he has a form.

“Whoever perfects these six means will remain eternally happy here in the life after.

“Mahārāj says for one who behaves this way, I will give them clothes, food, reputation, and wealth; and I will take them to my abode after death. Therefore, if one has not controlled indriyas after conquering them, then he remains unhappy even while staying with Mahārāj and Swāmi. Chant the name of God, meditate, serve in the mandir - all with indriyas conquered. ‘I am a devotee of God and I had an impure thought!’ - One would burn with regret if they have an impure thought.

“And he would never follow that path again. Many say, ‘Why does God not control our indriyas for us? Why does he allow my mind to be drawn to vishays?’ But, ‘Fool! Why do you let your own mind be drawn to vishays?’ One sits near God and the Sant but his mind wanders elsewhere - how can such a person be happy?

“Mahārāj said this three times over and over again. If one behaves this way, whether he is a sadhu, brahmachāri or gruhasth, he will be eternally happy. If some say two insulting words to us and we tolerate them, is there any misery in that? But if we hurl two insulting words back to them, then one goes to court (to resolve the argument). In Vartāl, senior sadguru sadhus insulted Mul Aksharmurti Gunātitānand Swāmi openly in the full assembly, but he tolerated it. When his turn came to talk, he did not utter one word of being insulted; albeit, he talked for three hours of the greatness of Mahārāj, observing niyams and dharma. Praise slipped from Pavitrānand Swāmi’s mouth, ‘Wow! He is a true Gunātit.’ He saw virtues in Swāmi. Then, everyone put dhotiyā on him and garlanded him. Swāmi said, ‘Honor and insult are the same to me.’ One who can behave this way is Gunātit.

“The sadhus asked questions in the Vachanāmrut on our behalf. Muktānand Swāmi asked, ‘Mahārāj, for a devotee of God, what is one of the greatest obstacle in his bhakti towards God?’ Mahārāj revealed three obstacles. First is not seeing their own faults. If we have anger or ego, we do not see it and look at others’ anger and ego - that type of nature is backward. If our beard is on fire, we should extinguish it. Why worry about someone else’s?

“Second obstacle is that one’s mind remains aloof of God and the Sant despite staying together with him. Just like how oil and water do not mix in the same cup. We should completely mix with God and the Sant like how sākar dissolves in milk. ‘Rasbas hoy rahi Rasiyā sang, jyu misari pay māhi bhali.’

“Third obstacle is one becomes indifferent to God and the Sant. If the Sant gives some burden, he flatly says, ‘I have a mandir at home. I’ll worship God at home.’ Moreover, he’ll say, ‘Liberation is only found there?’ One who develops indifference toward the Sant does not like his actions or his words. Even if the Satpurush advises affectionately, one who is aloof will feel, ‘I see... he pointed me out.’

“Of these three, the greatest obstacle is becoming indifferent to the Satpurush. He simply heads home. One who finds faults will remain in Satsang as is despite seeing faults. But the mind of one with an indifference toward God and the Sant will separate totally. He goes straight home. Jivā Khāchar, Alaiyā Khāchar, Nirvikalpānand were all who developed indifference. One who is aloof will remain in Satsang, but one who is indifferent is of a different ‘fashion’. He would never look back.

“Therefore, these three are the greatest obstacles in bhakti. He emphasized ‘greatest’. Remove these three obstacles by associating with the Satpurush.”
