Gadhada III-35: Forcefully Altering One’s Innate Nature; God Is Maligned When His Bhakta Is Maligned

Nirupan

July 26, 1976. Swamishri arrived in Mumbai. Once, Swamishri explained Vachanamrut Gadhada III-35:

“Only a jeweler can appraise a diamond; otherwise, to others, a chintāmani and a stone will be the same. In Rampara, the dirt is red; therefore, their clothes have an orange color. Just because their clothes are orange, we cannot call them sadhus. However, people are defrauded by pseudo-sadhus. They think of them as great mahātmās and become ruined in the end (by trusting them).

“Once, a lion who lived in one jungle could not find food and was starving. Searching for prey, he encountered a monkey sitting on one tree. The lion thought that he would not be able to kill the monkey, so he came up with a plot. He became a mahātmā and started to walk cautiously, blowing air on the ground.

“The monkey noticed this from the tree and thought, ‘Why is a carnivorous animal like the lion blowing air on the ground and taking steps cautiously.’ The monkey asked, ‘You are the king of the jungle. Why are you walking this way?’

“The lion answered, ‘Listen. I went on a pilgrimage and had darshan of all the holy places. I experienced the environment there. I saw others taking niyams so I also took a niyam not to kill any living beings - even as small as ants. Therefore, I am walking this way so I do not step on any ant and kill it.’

“The monkey thought how wonderful that a vicious lion was tamed in this way. He thought of bowing to the lion so that he may be liberated by him. He developed trust in the lion.

“The monkey jumped down from the tree. When he came near, the lion grabbed him by the neck. However, the monkey was clever. He started to laugh loudly. The lion asked, ‘Why are you laughing?’ The monkey said, ‘If you release me, I can tell you the reason for my joy.’ The lion let the monkey go. Just as a bullet is release from a gun, the monkey jumped back on the tree and started crying. The lion asked why he was now crying. The monkey said, ‘I am crying because you will kill many like me by gaining their trust.’

“There are many mahātmās like this lion in the world. There are many glass decorations in shops. When you step inside, you realize their value. If you go to buy gold and come back with copper, you will end up crying. If you walk with a candlelight and still fall into a well, then who is more foolish that us? Shriji Maharaj’s talks are like candlelight - he has explained the qualities of a true sadhu. We should not become trapped by false sadhus.”

[Brahmaswarup Pramukh Swami Maharaj: Part 2/260]
