A Note on Categorization

To categorize the shlokas of Satsang Diksha, three levels of categories were used. The number of top-level categories was minimized as much as possible to allow pinpointing the shlokas easier. Moreover, use of three levels of categorization allows for refinement in selection of shlokas.

The two main categories are ‘Commands’ and ‘Upasana’. The category ‘Understanding’ was created to include shlokas that are neither an explicit command, nor a principle of upasana, but rather are an understanding one should possess. For example, shloka:

To fulfill this ordinance and to grant moksha all, divine mandirs are devoutly constructed and the murti of Aksharbrahman is also ceremoniously consecrated with Purushottam Bhagwan in the central shrines [of these mandirs]. (90–91)

is an understanding of why mandirs are built. Some shlokas may fall under two categories. For example, the shloka:

One should always observe swadharma and renounce pardharma. Swadharma means to observe the commands of Bhagwan and the guru. The wise mumukshu should realize that pardharma is disregarding their instructions and acting willfully. (156–157)

is a combined shloka. The first part (number 156) is a command. However, the second part (number 157) is an understanding one should possess. Hence, this shloka will appear in the ‘Commands’ and ‘Understanding’ category.

The task of categorizing was a difficult one. Many decisions needed to be made. However, as it currently stands, some shlokas may need to be recategorized. For the time being, I hope this helps one find the shlokas based on their categorization.
