ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણના પરમભક્ત કવિ નરસિંહ મહેતાનો જન્મ ભાવનગર જિલ્લાના તળાજા ગામમાં વડનગરા નાગર બ્રાહ્મણ પરિવારમાં થયો હતો. ગુજરાતી ભાષાના પ્રથમ કવિ હતા, આથી તેઓ આદ્ય કવિ કહેવાય છે. સ્વામિનારાયણ સંપ્રદાયના આદિ ગુરુ પ્રથમ આત્માનંદ સ્વામીના તેઓ શિષ્ય હતા તેમ રામાનંદ સ્વામી ગુરુપરંપરાસ્તોત્રમાં કહે છે. તેમણે લખેલી લગભગ ૧૫૦૦ જેટલી રચનાઓમાં ‘વૈષ્ણવ જન તો...’ ભજન ખૂબ જાણીતું છે. નરસિંહ મહેતાનાં ભજનો સાંભળી સાક્ષાત્ ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણે તેમને દર્શન દીધાં હતાં. એટલું જ નહીં, પુત્રી કુંવરબાઈનું મામેરું, પુત્રનો વિવાહ, શામળશા શેઠને હૂંડી, શ્રાદ્ધ અને તેમના પર હારની ચોરીનું આળ ચઢાવવામાં આવ્યું વગેરે પ્રસંગે સ્વયં ભગવાને તેમનાં વિઘ્નો દૂર કર્યાં હતાં.

Narsinha Mehtā is one of the greatest devotees of Krishna Bhagwan. He was born in Talājā located in the Bhāvnagar district to a nāgar brāhmin family. He is the first poet in the Gujarati language, therefore, he is known as the original poet. In the Swaminarayan Sampraday, the first Atmanand Swami was his disciple according to Ramanand Swami in Guru-Parampara-Stotra. He has written more than 1,500 kirtans, of which ‘Vaishnav Jan To Tene Kahiye...’ is most well-known. Krishna gave Narsinha Mehtā darshan listening to his kirtans. Krishna also saved him when he needed to send a gift to his daughter Kunvarbāi during her pregnancy, during his son’s marriage, when he wrote a check to Shāmalshā Sheth, when falsely being accused of stealing a garland, etc.
