અશ્વત્થામા
શાસ્ત્રોમાં આવતાં પાત્રો
અશ્વત્થામા દ્રોણાચાર્ય અને કૃપીનો (કૃપાચાર્યની બહેનનો) પુત્ર હતો. તે ધનુર્વિદ્યામાં પારંગત હતો. મહાભારતના યુદ્ધ વખતે તેણે કૌરવોનો (ધૃતરાષ્ટ્ર અને ગાંધારીનો સો પુત્રોનો) પક્ષ લીધો. દ્રોણાચાર્યનો ધૃષ્ટદ્યુમ્ને વધ કર્યો તેથી અશ્વત્થામાએ ક્રોધ કરીને પાંડવ અને તેના વંશનો નાશ કરવા માટે બ્રહ્માસ્ત્ર છોડ્યું, પરંતુ ભગવાન શ્રીકૃષ્ણની કૃપાથી પાંડવો અને તેના વંશ એવા પરીક્ષિતની ગર્ભમાં રક્ષા થઈ. અશ્વત્થામા ચિરંજીવી હોવાનું મનાય છે. તે હાલમાં મધ્યપ્રદેશમાં છે તેવી લોકમાન્યતા છે.
સદ્ગુરુ નિષ્કુળાનંદ સ્વામીએ ભક્તચિંતામણિ પ્રકરણ ૧૫માં અશ્વત્થામાનો ઉલ્લેખ કર્યો છે. ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણનાં માતા-પિતા ધર્મ અને ભક્તિ અસુર ત્રાસ નિવારણ માટે ભગવાનને વિષ્ણુયાગ આદિ સાધનથી પ્રસન્ન કરવા વૃંદાવન આવ્યાં. ભગવાને પ્રસન્ન થઈ દર્શન આપી વરદાન આપ્યું કે તમારા ઘેર ભગવાન પત્રરૂપે જન્મ લેશે. દર્શન પામી પાછાં વળતાં ધર્મ અને ભક્તિ ભૂલાં પડ્યાં અને વનમાં અશ્વત્થામાનો મેળાપ થયો. ધર્મ અને ભક્તિએ અશ્વત્થામાને આ વાત કરી ત્યારે રોષે ભરાઈ અશ્વત્થામાએ શ્રાપ દીધો કે:
માટે હું પણ છઉં અશ્વત્થામા રે, દઉં છું શાપ સુણો નર વામા રે;
જેહ પુત્ર થાય તમારો રે, કહું શસ્ત્ર તે કેદિ મા ધારો રે. ૫૧
શસ્ત્ર વિના શત્રુ ન મરશે રે, મારા શાપે શસ્ત્ર ન ધરશે રે;
એમ કરતાં શસ્ત્ર લેશે હાથ રે, તો જીતશે નહિ વૈરી સાથ રે. ૫૨
ભગવાનને કોઈનો શાપ નડતો નથી પરંતુ અશ્વત્થામાનો શાપ સ્વીકાર્યો કારણ કે અતિ સમર્થ ભગવાનને અસ્ત્ર-શસ્ત્રની જરૂર પડતી નથી. ભગવાન સ્વામિનારાયણે અસ્ત્ર-શસ્ત્ર વિના, કેવળ ફુલ અને માળા પોતાના હસ્તમાં ધારી, અસુરોનો સંહાર કર્યો.

Ashwatthāmā is the son of Dronāchārya and Krupi (Krupāchārya’s sister). He was an expert in archery. He sided with the Kauravas (the 100 sons of Drutrāshtra and Gāndhāri) during the Mahabharat war. Drushtadyumna slayed Dronāchārya, his father, so the enraged Ashwatthāmā released the Brahmāstra weapon on the Pāndavas and their sons. However, Bhagwan Shri Krishna protected the Pāndavas and Parikshit who was still in the womb of Uttarā. Some people believe Ashwatthāmā is still alive, living in Madhya Pradesh.
Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami has mentioned Ashwatthāmā in Bhaktachintamani Prakaran 15. Bhagwan Swaminarayan’s parents, Dharma and Bhakti, trekked to Vrundavan to perform yagnas to please God to relieve their burden from evil persons. God was pleased and gave them darshan and said he will be born to them as their son. Happily, Dharma and Bhakti were returning home when they lost their way in the jungle. They met Ashwatthāmā. They told him about God being born to them as their son. Enraged about how Shri Krishna sided with the Pāndavas and killed his friend Duryodhan, he cursed them saying: “Your son will not be able to bear weapons. And without weapons, he cannot kill his enemies. If he does bear weapons, then he will not win against his enemies.”
No curse can hinder God, however God accepted the curse because God does not need weapons to defeat evil. Therefore, Bhagwan Swaminarayan defeated the evil on the earth while bearing a flower in one hand and a mālā in the other hand.
