પૃથુરાજા એ દ્વાપરયુગમાં થયેલા સૂર્યવંશના પાંચમા રાજા અને રાજા વેનના પુત્ર હતા. તે વિષ્ણુનો નવમા અંશાવતાર ગણાય છે. તેમના નામ ઉપરથી પૃથ્વીનું નામ પડ્યું છે. વિષ્ણુપુરાણમાં જણાવ્યું છે કે, જ્યારે વેન રાજાએ પૂજા તથા યજ્ઞની મનાઈ કરી ત્યારે ઋષિઓએ તેને મારી નાખ્યો. તેને કાંઈ સંતાન ન હતું. જ્યારે રાજ્ય શક્તિહીન થઈ ગયું, ત્યારે ઋષિઓએ મરી ગયેલા રાજાની ભુજાઓનું મંથન કર્યું અને તેમાંથી સ્ત્રી-પુરુષનું જોડકું ઉત્પન્ન થયું. આમ, પુરુષ જે પૃથુ રાજા થયા અને સ્ત્રી જે સ્વયં લક્ષ્મીજી હતાં તે પૃથુરાજાનાં પત્ની થયાં. તેમને દુકાળથી પીડાતી પ્રજા માટે ગૌરૂપી પૃથ્વીને દોહી બધી જાતના અનાજ, શાકભાજી, ફળ વનસ્પતિ આદિને દૂધરૂપે કાઢ્યાં. તેમણે સરસ્વતી નદીને કાંઠે સો અશ્વમેધ યજ્ઞ કર્યા. પોતાના શરીરને વૃદ્ધ થયેલું જોઈ પુત્ર વિજિતાશ્વને રાજ્ય સોંપી પત્ની સહિત તપોવનમાં ગયા. ત્યાં વાનપ્રસ્થ રહી દૃઢ નિયમો પાળી પોતાના જીવાત્માને પરબ્રહ્મમાં જોડી બ્રહ્મરૂપ થઈ મોક્ષ પામ્યા.

પૃથુરાજાએ કરેલા નવ્વાણુ યજ્ઞોથી સંતોષાઈને ભગવાને દર્શન દીધાં અને ઉપદેશ આપ્યો તે પછી પૃથુરાજાએ પ્રાર્થના કરતાં દસ હજાર કાન માંગ્યા, જેથી તે ભગવાનની લીલાઓના ગુણો અવિરત સાંભળી શકે. પૃથુરાજાની કથા સાંભળવાની અસાધારણ ભક્તિની વાત મહારાજે વચનામૃત વરતાલ ૩માં કરી છે.

અક્ષરબ્રહ્મ ગુણાતીતાનંદ સ્વામીએ પૃથુ રાજાનો ઉલ્લેખ સ્વામીની વાતો ૬/૨૦૯માં કર્યો છે અને તેમની કથા સાંભળવાની આસક્તિની પ્રશંસા કરી છે.

King Pruthu was a king who lived during the Dwāpar Yug. He belonged to the Suryavansha dynasty of kings and was the son of King Vena. He is considered the ninth avatār of Vishnu. The prithvi (the earth) is named after him. According to the Vishnu-Purān, King Vena forbid puja and yagnas, angering the rishis. They killed King Vena. Vena had no children, therefore, the kingdom suffered from a famine. The rishis churned his body and from his right arm, a male and female emerged. The male for Pruthu and female was Lakshmiji, who became his wife. Pruthu milked the earth in the form of a cow and obtained various types of grains, vegetables, fruits and plants. He performed 100 Ashwamedh yagnas on the bank of Saraswati river. When he became old, he left his kingdom to his son Vijitāshwa. He and his wife retired to the forest. He connected his jiva to God and attained moksha.

God became pleased when King Pruthu performed 99 yagnas and gave him darshan. Pruthu prayed to God and asked him for 10,000 ears so that he can listen to the divine incidents of God constantly. Shriji Maharaj has mentioned King Pruthu’s extraordinary bhakti for listening to kathā in Vachanamrut Vartal 3.
