Samvat 1997, Sarangpur. On the same day, Nirgundās Swāmi read Vachanāmrut Sarangpur 1, 8, and 9. He thus spoke eloquently about winning over the mind, saying, “When I was Kothāri of Mumbai Mandir in Samvat 1953 [1897 CE], Brahmaswarup Shri Prāgji Bhakta wrote to me. He explained that by keeping the mind engrossed in the nine types of devotion, unrighteous thoughts would not arise. Māhāraj has shown no other way to win over the mind except for devotion.”

Uddhavjibhai of Botād then asked a question, “When can you say the mind has been won?”

Nirgundās Swāmi smiled and said, “The mind gets in the way of keeping a sense of flawlessness in God or the Satpurush. However, if one does not harbor any suspicions or doubts, then the mind is said to have been won over. This is the only way to avoid unrighteous thoughts in the mind. If one has sinned anywhere, then that sin is burnt away through the pilgrimage place in the form of the Sant. However, if one has sinned in relation to the form of the Sant, then that is etched in iron. One has not won over the mind if one still has doubts and suspicions, or sees flaws in the Ekāntik Sant of God. Based on this, one should think about Vachanāmrut Gadhadā II-14 and Vartāl 1. A mango tree is a mango tree and a neem tree is a neem tree; such conviction will never change even if someone tries to change it. In the same way, if one has firm conviction in God or the Ekāntik Satpurush, one is said to have won over the mind.”

[Brahmaswarup Shāstriji Mahārāj: 2/70]

In the afternoon discourse, Yogiji Mahārāj explained Vachanāmrut Sārangpur 1, “What does intensely firm renunciation from panch-vishays mean? Physical renunciation is there, but one does not even wish to enjoy the panch-vishays.

“What is ‘some’ affection for the vishays? One takes a vow to refrain from eating items made of wheat; however, if jalebi is served, then one abandons that vow and takes a vow to refrain from items of rice. Further, if dudh-pāk is served, then one abandons that vow and goes back to wheat.

“What does greatness [of God or Sant] mean? If the Collector or Viceroy calls someone, then one becomes extremely elated. He would walk in the village and tell everyone, ‘The Collector called me.’ This is worldly greatness. In the same way, one should derive happiness and elation here [in Satsang]. When Shāstriji Mahārāj was present, my chest would expand [with happiness] - I got to sit near him! If he asks me to do something, I would become ecstatic. I would give my life. If one does not understand the greatness of God or Sant, then one thinks: they say whatever they want, what’s in it for us? That is how he thinks...”

[Brahmaswarup Yogiji Mahārāj: 5/194]

The following words were read in Vachanāmrut Sārangpur 1: “If one were to gather together all of the pleasures of the vishays of countless millions of brahmānds, even then it would not equal even one millionth of a fraction of the bliss which is present in just one pore of God...”

Regarding these words, Pramukh Swāmi Mahārāj said, “Because God is in the form of an ordinary man, we do not feel this way. However, we should firmly believe that all bliss is in that form. All of the pleasures of the vishays are included in that one bliss of God. If we understand that God is the source of all bliss, then one would not expect happiness from elsewhere. In this world, man believes happiness is in a woman and he forgets the world (i.e. abondoning other types of pleasures in the world, he yearns for the pleasure of a woman). If one believes money brings happiness, then he forgets all other types of happiness. Similarly, when one believes the source of happiness is God, other sources of happiness become worthless to him. Did not the kings in the past renounce their kingdoms? If one understands the greatness of God, then one can renounce anything.”
