Translation
(1) Jangal vasāvyo jogīe
This kirtan by Sadguru Nishkulanand Swami marks the first of 12 kirtans about true vairāgya (renunciation). In the first one, Nishkulanand Swami speaks of a king who renounced his kingdom and its pleasures. The king comes across a woman who tries to thwart his renunciation with good food. Swami points out that one who becomes enticed by food (or other indulgences) is not a true renunciant. This has been mentioned by Mul Aksharmurti Shri Gunatitanand Swami in Swamini Vat 5/380.
Jangal vasāvyo jogīe, tajī jeṇe tanḍānī āshjī;
A jogi (a king embarking on renunciation) made the jungle his home. He renounced all expectations of his own body (conveniences, pleasures).
Vāt na game ā vishvanī, āṭho pahor udāsjī... jangal 1
He did not like talks of this world. He remained apathetic toward the pleasures of the world all day.
Sej-palange poḍhtā, mandir jharukhā māyjī;
In the past, he slept on soft beds and lived in palaces with balconies.
Tene nahi re truṇ-sāthro, rahetā tarūtal chhāyjī... jangal 2
Now, he does not even have a bed of grass. He stays in the shade of a tree.
Shāl dushālā oḍhtā, jhīṇā jarkashī jāmājī;
He covered himself with fine shawls and wore fine garments.
Tene rākhī re kanṭhā godaḍī, sahe shir shīt ne ghāmjī... jangal 3
Now, he keeps a blanket made of rough fabric and tolerates the cold and heat.
Bhāvtā bhojan jamtā, anek vidhnā annajī;
He ate foods - all various kinds - that he liked.
Te re māgaṇ lāgyā ṭukaḍā, bhikshā bhuvan bhuvanjī... jangal 4
Now, he begs for pieces of food by going from house to house.
Hājī kahetā hajār ūṭhtā, chāltā lashkar lāvjī;
When he asked for something, thousands came to serve. And when he walked, an army followed.
Te nar chāḷyā re eklā, nahi pejāru pāvjī... jangal 5
Now, he walks alone, without shoes on his feet.
Raho to rājā rasoī karu, jamtā jāo jogīrājjī;
O King! If you stay, I’ll prepare food. Please eat and then go.
Khīr nipjāvu kshaṇu ekmā, te to bhikshāne kājjī... jangal 6
I will make khir in no time and give it to you as bhikshā.
Āhār kāraṇe je ūbho rahe, karī eknī āshjī;
One who stays for the sake of receiving food; one who has made this their sole expectation...
Te jogī nahi bhogī jāṇvo, ante thāye vaṇāshjī... jangal 7
Is not a true renunciant; he is indulgent. He will be disgraced in the end.
Rāj sāj sukh parharī, je jan leshe jogjī;
One who renounces their kingdom and all its pleasures and walks the path of renunciation...
Dhan re dārāmā te nahī dhase, rog sam jāṇe bhogjī... jangal 8
And is not drawn toward women and wealth - as if these indulgences are a disease...
Dhanya e tyāg vairāgyne, tajī jeṇe tanḍānī āshjī;
Blessed is their vairāgya, for they have renounced every form of pleasures of the body.
Kuḷ re tajīne nishkuḷ thayā, tenu kuḷ avīnāshjī... jangal 9
Those who renounced their family and became without a family - then their ‘family’ is immortal.
